Topic: Why Is The 747 Also Called The 744?
Username: Timbo

I've seen many posts where people refer to the 747 as the 744 and the 737 as the 736. What do the different numbers mean? Is there a difference between a 744 and a 747?

Thanks,
Tim

Also goes for aircraft with letters in their names...

Canadair Regional Jet = CRJ
737-700: 73G (G being the 7th letter as 737 would not work)

and so on...

They use these designations on ATC data blocks.

Not all 747's are called the 744. Only one type is, the 747-400. Just like people call 737-800's 738's and 767-200's 762's. It is an abreviation.

Hi, what do the numbers stand for (ex: I see 747-422), what is the 22 for, I also see a 38 and many other ones. What do they mean?

CPDC10,

I thought the last 2 numbers had something to do with the seating config.

It is a 737-200 belonging to whoever Boeing has allocated the code H4 to...

NB THIS IS ONLY WITH BOEING AIRCRAFT. Airbus have a different style of two digit designator that represents engine type and edition (e.g A340-313 is an A340-300 with CFM engines (1) and it is the third edition of the design)

And H4 would be Southwest, apparently...

Just on this subject, does anyone know what the X is at the end of some Airbus designation (e.g. A340-313X)

To date, Airbus only uses the "X" suffix to designate upgraded (bot not-yet-available) versions of a specific model. They had the A330-300X and now have a A340-300X. I believe this will be replaced by a more "marketing-appealing" designation.
