Not meaning to be insensitive to anyone, but why does it matter what nationality the passengers are? It implies that if the plane was carrying 3 Panamans it would be less important/relevant? If a plane is missing, a plane is missing.

well an American TV station covering a news event about missing Americans..makes sense to me. The nationality of the passengers matter because If the plane was carrying 3 Panamanians, it probably wouldn't have made the American news.

Well, this is a international site, not an American TV station. The way the title is used here implies that the nationality is important. I do realise that he has only used the title from the story, but should have used another title when posting here.

One points out that the IHT and PR Inside articles were syndicated from the Associated Press whose writer is based in the Los Angeles, USA area.

When it involves a family, (a father and a young daughter) and a daughter's friend, then it becomes big news.

The pilot also missing was a Panamanian yet the title of the article neglects to mention him due to his nationality.  Yeah sure

That being said my thoughts are with those effected by this tragedy.

Did you even bother to read the article? If you did, then you would have noticed that a father and his teenage daughter are missing, so the last time I checked, that makes one family, then the friend, so that makes two family's, then the pilot, so that makes a grand total os three family's.

3 Dead, 1 Survivor in Panama Plane Crash

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) — The bodies of two Americans and the Panamanian pilot of a plane that crashed over the weekend were found Tuesday in Panama's mountains, officials said. A teenage girl survived.

California businessman Michael Klein, 37, pilot Edwin Lasso and one of two American girls traveling with Klein were found dead, said Roberto Rolando Rodriguez, a spokesman for Panama's air security agency.

A second girl survived the crash, Rodriguez said, but it was not immediately clear whether the survivor was Klein's 13-year-old daughter Talia or her 12-year-old friend Francesca Lewis.

It's presumed it was a single engine Cessna.

Agreed! Regardless of nationality, people lost their lives, may they rest in peace.

Everyone involved in a tragedy should be cause for concern.
What's wrong with people's mentality? If' a Panamanian's life is lost, it has no value? If an African or Chinese died, it has no value? An American is also a human first more than anything.

Missing, but not yet dead, still there is hope. . . . PRAY.

I'm very happy that at least one family will not be having a funeral, and prayers for those which will.

But overall - I think you folks are taking a news report way to serious and making blanket statements without foundation. It's not that any life doesn't have value - but about the news 'tear jerker' potential of how the news media works.

According to the US FAA - in the two weeks between Dec 7 and Dec 21 there were at least 11 fatal aircraft crashes in the US - with at least 16 people losing their lives. Only TWO of those crashes were reported on this forum - that I can find.

This story in Panama meets all the 'tear jerker' requirements for a news story to sell in the US - young children, far from home, family worried about missing daughter, etc. The initial story was for US domestic outlets.

Newspapers, TV Stations, Radio Stations and even web sites has "new budgets" each day.

For a newspaper - it's column inches; for TV and radio - it's air time; for web sites - it's the number of stories which hit the top of the page.

For CNN - that is 15 stores, for FoxNews - it's 20 stories. This one is currently #4 on CNN and #3 on Fox.

An editor will only allow a reporter so much time on a story until they get feedback that it is causing a reaction among the target audience of consumers. The web outlets have better immediate feedback because they can track hits on a story. The audience for this story again is a US domestic audience - with Santa Barbara California being the main target audience.

This story doesn't make the main page on Reuters,

Yes, this is an international web site - but you cannot expect members to all place the same weight on a news story. People will identify with a news story when common factors link them to the persons in the story. Basic Journalism 101 - put the reader into the story, make them feel it is personal. So stories about Americans are going to be read by Americans, and reported by Americans.

The topic heading is accurate - not complete - but accurate, especially given the source of the first information.

More importantly - this is an english language web site - so the stories discussed on this site are going to be primarily those reported in english.

Which also means a large percentage of them are going to be about citizens or nationals of the United States.

That's just the math of the demographics of the people on this site.

Per Good Morning America, the survivor was the friend, 12-year old "Frankie" Lewis. She has been reunited with her family after her harrowing ordeal. Despite being tangled in wreckage 50 feet above the ground, she was pulled out with barely a scratch but is obviously going to be in a lot of pain dealing with the loss of her best friend, her best friend's father, and the pilot. Good luck to Frankie as she recovers and RIP to the three that died.
