When i flew back to IND we had taxied by the new terminal--it was night out, but even in the darkness, you could see the new terminal because of all of the lights. Both concourses were lit up from the inside and so was a lot of the main terminal. You could see where the doors for the jetways will be because they are covered up with plywood, etc. I also heard on one of the news stations on TV (i believe it was WISH TV) that an opening date should be announced in March/April..i tried to look for the story online but i cannot find anything for some reason. fyi. cheers  

Agreed - I flew into IND yesterday and it looked almost done except for the plywood you mentioned where the jetways will go, and I couldn't tell if the spiral ramps on the parking garage were complete or not. Looking forward to using the new terminal this winter!

It would be nice if the airport updated their construction cam more often than once a month. It really is sad. Lucas Oil Stadium has a top of the line cam setup. IND has a cheap update once a month or so setup.

I agree with you in that they need to update the camera...i would say the sprial drives on the garage are done because it looks like they are finishing up the tope level on the garage...although that is from the picture. I would love to be there as one of the first passengers to leave from the terminal  

Some of the guys from the IND site were down at the airport today for some spotting. Maybe they got some pics of the new terminal. I'm waiting to see what they came up with. I was going to show up but I went and took a short nap and overslept lol.

All of this reminds me of when they were only building the steel fortress of PIT back in 1991-1992. I remember going there to greet my mom from a business trip. Of course, we were at the old terminal, but off in the distance you could see this thing going up. The media made a huge deal of it when it opened.

It will be interesting to hear about an opening date. Someone should start a thread on this and include media clips of the grand opening!

Could someone familiar with airport construction explain something in this pic? Each concourse is supposed to have 20 jet bridges. Yet in this photo I can zoom in and count 19 boarded up doors on the concourse. This covers the long side and one end. The other end would have one boarded up door plus whatever is on the other side of the concourse. Based on what the plans show it would be 6 or 7 doors. So there would be somewhere around 26 or 27 boarded up doors. Why would there be 6 or 7 more of these than expected jet bridges?

Here's a construction plan of the terminal, and you can see the terminal's emergency exit doors, which would need an extra door.

Some of the stuff they have is dated material. I have the executive summary for the midfield terminal project and things have changed since that. But those things are emergency exits? Or is that a best guess? I was wondering if these openings were being place to allow them to change where jet bridges went or go with three jet bridges in the space that two would normally occupy if the airline had an RJ heavy schedule. I don't recall seeing this kind of arrangement at any other airport.

I also notice a lack of escalators in the concourses which would leave me wondering how they'd ever to tarmac boarding for some regional jets. Cape Air serves IND. How would passengers access the planes? Perhaps these areas we are looking at will provide tarmac access? Just guessing.

I would never have guessed emergency exits. So far I can't find any other examples where concourses have this. Can you provide an example?

Maybe they will use stairs off the end of the jetbridges like they do at BOS and LGA.

It was great going around and taking pictures yesterday. But damn it was cold. Your hands would start burning after only a few minutes.

Great to see some current pics! I flew out of IND a few times this fall (in September, October and December) and each time the new terminal looked like it was coming along nicely.

A few comments based on the interior diagram in reply 7:

- nice to see check-in "islands" instead of the usual US linear format. Most major airports in Europe and Asia have adopted this format and it makes so much more sense. Here in the US, I've only seen them at JFK (in T1, T4 and T8), in LAX's TBIT and at the new international terminal in San Francisco.

- interesting that IND opted for two separate security checkpoints, when the trend at most new terminals is for single, centralized checkpoints. I assume this was done so that the Civic Plaza could be located outside of security and thus be accessible to all. Hopefully it will have some nice views over the apron.

- will it be possible to move between the two concourses without leaving security? I can't tell if there's an interior corridor on the diagram or not.

- do we have any idea of airline gate allocations yet? I know there's been a lot of speculation regarding how many gates each airline will take.

I think you will be able to. I have the larger image of that terminal map and it looks like there might be a walkway that goes around the edge of the civic plaza. Perhaps a sloped floor that leads to an elevated walk between the sides.

No idea. Well there are the rumors but nothing official and mergers could change things. Which is going to be interesting since you'd think contracts on gates would be due in the coming months if they aren't in already. How does an airline like NW position themselves? Do they get the gate space they would need based on today's world and then be stuck paying on them for years when they don't need them? Or do they plan for the post merger world and perhaps come up short?

The new terminal has 38 + 2 international arrivals gates (which double as domestic gates... so 40). The old terminal has 34 jet bridges but NW uses 4 of them to service two jets each so it acts like 38 gates instead of 34.

When I there taking pics on the 20th the jets were landing away from the terminal. When they do that you are looking at about a 3 mile total taxi. The midfield terminal will correct that.

Wonderful. The new building looking stunning BTW. I think it should be bigger however. NW Could really do some serious damage out of IND.
