Singapore Airlines has the biggets hangar in the world. Now it will break that record with another hanger! Hoorah! My friends we have come to a new age!

SIA Eng launches third Singapore hangar
SINGAPORE, Jan 31 (Reuters) - SIA Engineering Co, a unit of Singapore Airlines (Singapore: SIAL.SI - news) Ltd , on Wednesday launched its third maintenance hangar at Singapore's Changi Airport.

The S$25 million ($14.3 million) hangar will increase the firm's airframe maintenance and overhaul capacity by about 15 percent and allow it to accomodate aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and 747-400 and the Airbus A340-500/600.

SIA Engineering plans to invest S$80 million to S$90 million over the next two years in two more hangars to meet projected capacity requirements, president and chief operating officer Mervyn Sirisena said in a statement.

The two additional hangars are expected to be ready in 2002 and 2003, increasing capacity by 30 percent and allowing the company to accomodate the new Airbus super jumbo A380.

The firm said its order books were full for the year ending in March 2001 and that external airframe overhaul work in the next financial year was already more than 80 percent committed.

The majority of the contracts ranged from two to five years.

SIA Engineering shares were up seven cents to S$1.30 on Wednesday afternoon. (Quite cheap. I should invest in them as well)

How is building a big hanger coming "to a new age" as you say?

Welll it's a new age as it doesn't have pillars to support it. That's a new age. Also it can hold a lot more aircraf than at present.

I take it by your tone that you disagree my dear.

I doubt that it will be the worlds largest hangar. To my knowledge the largest hangar is being built just south of Berlin, Germany for the "Cargolifter".
This structure is 360m / 1185 feet long, 210m / 690 feet wide and 107m / 352 feet high. Impressive!

Actually the biggest hanger in the world is at Area 51. Russian satellite photos have been released that show this massive structure. However the U.S. Government says it doesn't exist.

Hmmm. Is that a normal hangar (as in civil aviation) (as in 747 kind) or is it military.

I haven't been clear again have I?! THe new hangar at Singapore Airlines Engineering Corp is the largest civilian hangar which handals civilian aircraft

Will it be big enough for the A380?

dear WorldVoyager,

the new hangar which is just been completed can hold aircrafts such as 747-400, 777 and the 340-500/-600 but not the A380. The hangar which could hold the A380 will be completed in the near future. do you get me? it seems that you guys out there don't agree that Singapore has the largest Civil Aviation aircraft hangar in the world, huh?

I still don't see what "new age" we are in that SQ has a big hanger. From your post I now Know one more fact then when i woke up, and that is that SQ has a big hanger, but it's no new age.

i think what Singapore_Air is trying to say here is that the new SIA hangar (not hanger) is the biggest, most modern and most up-to-date in the world......in other words the most sophisticated.....

i don´t know if one could call it a hangar, but the boeing "hangar" at everett in which all the 747s, 777s and 767s are built, is the building with the worldwide largest volume. and i don´t think that any airline just to overhaul some 747s would build a hangar bigger than that one. and believe me, the boeing thing is huge, i went to see their plant in ´98.

No pillar doesn't make any 'new age'. KAL's new Seoul maintenance building can accodomate 2 747s and 1 300 without a pillar. (I believe it can serve 380 because of height.)

Anyway, how large is it? Curious.
