I have seen many people walking down the steps at the end of a flight, then immediately light a cigarette right by the aircraft - this applies mainly to FR flights where no airbridges are used and pax walk across the stand to enter the terminal. This strikes me as idiocy, particularly when refuelling is taking place nearby. I know that aviation fuel is not likely to be ignited by a cigarette, but still, in apron areas it strikes me that this cannot be sensible. What about things like deicer and lubricants?

Is this actually allowed in some places? I know that it is prohibited at STN, but people still do it so regularly. Many people even attempt to continue smoking after being told to stop by airport staff. Does this happen in your airport?

Also, without meaning to start a race argument, why is it that nine times out of ten it seems to be Italians that I see doing this??

It's true that many different people do this, but after years of daily observation I can categorically state that Italian passengers and Italian flights lead the way in the smoking on the apron stakes.

Yeah, could be true! The Alitalia crews were the only crews which I have seen in restaurants drinking wine in their uniform after their flights  biggrin

Downright stupid and reckless indeed! It's not when you're holding it, but when they throw away the "butt" it can fly anywhere when still lighted... In a worst case scenario in the direction of nearby refuelling...

No kiddin! The thing I would worry about the most is if they were to see the drain and think "Oh a drain there is water, I'm doing the right thing!" Except for anything coming off the ramp going into those drains as well, including some Jet-A....and well I'm sure you could picture what'll happen!

At JNB domestic terminal there are smokers' shelters just outside the building, they are obviously not for pax but are within 15 metres of parked aircraft.

Deicer is water based, as far as I know. Lighting off a lubricant with a cigarette would be phenomenally difficult...much harder than lighting Jet-A.

It's not a great idea, don't get me wrong, but it's not nearly as dangerous as it might appear.

Smoking on the ramp? So, what. All you guys think it is the end of the world. Sorry, Jet-A just doesn't ignite very easily. I've worked around airplanes for 17 years. Some of the hangars I've worked in were smoke filled. Nearly half of the crew smoked around the airplane all night. It didn't matter if they were changing fuel filters or opening fuel tanks. These guys were lit up. Now if it had been AvGas I would have been worried.

If you think I'm crazy go get some diesel fuel or K1 and try to ignite it with a cig or match.

There are many much more likely sources of ignition of a fire from refueling an aircraft than any passengers lighting cigarettes as they deplane.

Static electricity is the greatest danger.

The 'threat' from the pax is too minor to consider an issue. There really are not flammable liquids anywhere near the passengers - unless it's something like a C-172 being fueled from open cans.

But it's still stupid and dumb - for health reasons, not safety.

Yep,

The cigarette is not the issue, it is the match or lighter that is the far greater risk. (there are ingredients of some cigarettes that do burn somewhat hotter than normal tobacco that could be a problem, but they will likely cause you a run in with law enforcement most places as well)

When my father was in Air Force apprentice training an instructor took a lighted cigarette and dipped it into aviation gasoline.... he was not prepared to do the same with a lighted match!

Exactly, but it's a good working practice to ban the first so that the 2nd doesn't become the risk!

Whoa,

I would never do it with Avgas but I have done it with Jet-A a few times to shake up the new guys.

Those who know the difference between gasoline and diesel car engines will understand the difference here. It is much harder to ignite Jet-A/Kerosene/Diesel (all essentially the same thing) than it is to ignite gasoline.
