The unidentified operator also took options on an additional 4 models. Any clues as to the operator of the CRJ700's?

The CRJ700 NextGen is finding traction with operators.

GoJet Airlines 4-On order
SkyWest 18-On order
Felix Airways 8-On Order
Unidentified 6-On order
Mesa-10 On order

All of the information was courtesy of Bombardier.com

Hopefully the CRJ900 and the CRJ1000 will be able to receive some orders at the upcoming Farnborough show.

Has Lufthansa been planning on expanding its regional empire recently?

They (the whole LH-Group) have 15 CRJ-900 and 30 ERJ-190 on orders, so I guess some of that is for expansions

Sounds like the CRJ700 is having a revival, with suddenly 40 aircraft on order backlog. Are NextGen economics really that good?

Why do airlines choose to remain unidentified? Is it throw competitors off the scent and then surprise them by offering a newer aircraft?

Maybe an additional order of LH to be announced in Farnborough (together with a launch of the CSeries  Smile )
LH just said that they will retire their 735s next year -maybe the A319 is too big on some routes that currently see the 735.
