Okay who is going to watch the A 380 land? I am definitely going....

Does anyone know which runway it will land on? I am presuming 30R?

Where are you going to be when it lands? I will try to check for an area next to the Airport Expo

Hiya,

Unfortunately I am cought up with a few things and will not be able to be there; however it's game on Friday for the first commercial flight.

Yes, it should go down 30R. Landing is now projected for 17:23 Dubai time.

Don't go to the Airport Expo!!! It is better to go to the other side. If you have GPS or try Google Earth with these coordinates: N25.244463 E55.39062

In other words, if you are coming from Bur Dubai, use the Airport tunnel towards Deira. Keep right and take the first exit. On the lights turn right to Abu Hali road. Continue straight to the first roundabout and take a right on that roundabout. Continue down the road. You will have 30R right in front of you. You can park at the school or on the adjacent parking lot. One way or the other, you will have the 380 about 300 ft. from you.

Don't forget to take pictures and good luck.

Well I guess it is a 50:50 chance  biggrin

The best thing to do is to go to the airport about 30 minutes in advance and see on which runway the planes land. At this time of day it should be 30R, but you never know... It's all in the wind.

I worked in Dubai for 9 months, and it was pretty unusual for them to have not switched to 30s by midday.

I wish I was still out there to see this big bird arrive. My preferred spotting place for the afternoons was the waste land between Mirdiff and the Emirates Road.

Great touchdown shot, you were in the right spot.
The view from EK HQ was partly obscured by the construction, and the distance combined with the haze played its part, so you did the right thing.

So security looked the other way today...? Don't you wish it was like that every day...

Well, the B742 was last built in 1991, so it was exciting indeed. It´ll take longer though for
the A380 to get into this shape, since it´s a bit more expensive I think airlines will look after them better...

Well, that's life, can't have it all, at least I was lucky enough to have been able to be on the ramp a few times, plus we have our iconic 380/Burj shots and today I felt somewhat privileged to stand on the balcony of EK HQ, much better than nothing.

Quoting AKE0404AR (Reply 21):

Well it's surprising how uninterested in these things the large majority of airport staff here is. For most, it's just another job. That said, I didn't see too many people on the ramp, at least as far as I could tell from the distance.

Man, I would love to move there. There is no way any airport in the United States would be as welcoming to people watching such an event. I'm pretty jealous. Maybe in the far-off future Emirates will use one of their A380s and fly to Boston...or at least use a 777. I'd be on it!

Thanks Fly-K

I had Media access granted as I was doing some photo's for a magazine.
Real pitty was the security drove all the media in a buss, to the wrong side
of the landing, with the sun in front of us, they did not want to get us on the
other side due to safety reasons.
But as u said, why could the security and police not look away like this every day.
But again thanks to the airport police and security. They had cold water and drinks for us the whole time and got us very close, most propably never be able to get this close to any aircraft in Dubai. Thought I would see u there Fly-K

They normally switch Runway's just after the rush from 12R to 30R.
But ATC have been asked to allow the A380 to use 30L for departure on Friday
as 30R have to much weight restrictions due to obstacle clearance at the end.

Not really smog, but sand.

Despite the near constant sun, the sky is rarely a nice, deep shade of blue. Most often a milky grey colour, which becomes more yellow the closer you get to the horizon. Photography there can be challenging, even without having to play "dodge the policeman!"

I do miss the place though.

nice pictures all you guys. A shame that the weather in Dubai is so harsh for aviation photography and the authorities done help either.
What I would really love to see is one of you guys who represent Dubai on the aviation front get a shot of the EK megabus roaring down Sheikh Zayed Road at 1000' (no wait, skyscrapers there are at least 1200'!!) Roaring down at 2000' with all the rows of its supertall architecture.

Later it does a knife edge turn and buzzes the 5000 or so workers working up at Burj Dubai.
Its wake from the mammoth wings sway the construction cranes perched up top at 680m or so.

I will be in San Francisco next monday, to see picts so quick from you guys on this very day it gets delivered to the bay area in a few days is a truly amazing feat. I certainly plan to get shots of this EKA with my own camera and lens as I shoot from the Bayshore. Like what you guys have done, I shall share mine too once they are uploaded.

Only a few days away, it will spend the most time away from homebase half way around the world in America. Congrats to EK.

Was there too. She took off from the middle of runway 12R and with loads of runway left after rotation. All went smooth as silk and she was very quiet too...given the fuel and passangers on board.

We had a chance to compare her with a Malaysia 744F, which took off about an hour before her. The 744F was loud as loud can be, she was a whisper.

Have done a video for all of you. You can find the link below to YouTube. I need to get a better camera ASAP.

Have done a video for all of you

Cool! That was from Al Twar near old Zayed University campus? Should've thought about that location, really great and better than where I was on the other side of Emirates Rd near Mirdif. Seems like there were quite a few spectators - normally I avoid this spot due to the police.

Hi Konstantin,

Yes, it was a good location to shoot there. We had the chance of seeing her at the terminal. Quite easy as it was the only tail sticking out of the rest. Biggest surprise was when they pushed her out she took the first taxiway onto 12R (about middle of 12R) and started rolling. She rotated before the point where we were standing. Police passed by twice, but did not really care. They are quite felxible as long as you are not taking pictures of the government area at the end of 12R.

If you are planning to go and see the arrival, and it is on 30L or 30R then this is the best spot.

We were about 20 at that time.

It's most likely on 30R, but in the afternoon you'd be facing the sun from Al Twar.

I think I'll give it a try from my usual spot. Too bad it's even hazier today.

It would be great if police in general would adopt a more open attitude towards our hobby!

I speculated on a 12R takeoff as the wind was still from the desert. Were you on the other side?

Nope, was sleeping after niteshift. Will try and catch her this afternoon at our usual spot.

Cannot agree with you more. I wonder if they would start something like photographer badges if we supply them with credentials.  crossfingers

Man, I would love to move there. There is no way any airport in the United States would be as welcoming to people watching such an event. I'm pretty jealous. Maybe in the far-off future Emirates will use one of their A380s and fly to Boston...or at least use a 777. I'd be on it!

I agree! Would loved to have been there for the arrival of the, in my opinion, best looking A380!

Now, with that said, there were several airports that went above and beyond the call when the A380 made visits to the USA here the last couple of years, CVG, JFK, LAX, and BDL all made places for people to stand and snap pictures. So it's not all lost here in the states, but I do see your point on this as well. It's well taken too.  Smile

Just a little info on the security issue, CVG police allowed people down a secured side road just so they could stand along the fence row where the A380 was parked. Heck the airport authority had signs pointing you to that road oddly enough! LOL!! It was quite the sight to say the least. And to tie it in to the EK bird, it was F-WWEA. F-WWEA is a soon to be EK bird herself.

Treat her well guys. I enjoyed the few hours I got to walk in and around her while at CVG.

Beautiful pictures BTW!

I have thought about that too, I think it depends on whom we approach with this idea. For example, maybe Sheikh Ahmed would support the idea  Wink

Thank you! The landing 20 minutes ago wasn't that great for photos as the sun had almost disappeared behind the haze and a layer of clouds... but anyways, great to see it.
