Here's hoping for a 31L arrival.

But given the afternoon weather these days I doubt it.

I would like to see that behemoth do a Canarsie approach....

What does EK have instore for all the JFK passengers.... I bet you there will be a grand celebration!!!!

Does anyone have any info on the preparations at JFK?

Why?! 31L means the Firestone location is worthless for shooting! The Canarsie approach is 13L, if that's what you meant...

I'm hoping for 22L, but the way the winds are forecast it looks like the 31s. Hopefully 31R if that's the case!

Does anyone know what the runway configuration is currently?
And would it change between now and 4:30?

13L/31R is closed which is bad, bad news if they're on the 31s. There's only one good place to see it from for 31L and the light is tough. I'm hoping for 22L and from the wind forecast this looks likely. I'll keep checking ATIS and the NOTAMS until right before I mobilize.

As an aside I'm curious why they chose JFK as over LHR as their inaugural route for the A380.

May be this will add more publicity for Emirates in the US?

Maybe because SIA already were first with the 380 into LHR and they wanted a "First" into somewhere high profile.

Emirates will be the first operator of the A380 into North America.

Thit raises another Question???
Who will be the first to operate the A380 to Africa, South America

Singapore now have Australia, Europe and Asia
Emirates have North America.

When will Emirates get their second A380, and will it also be used on the New York route?
Without a second frame, the JFK flight could not operate daily with one 380.

Also, unrelated question, are there any penalties on the DXB-JFK route or can the A380 handle it with a full payload?

A still unrelated comment, the A380 is a stupendous aircraft, but I have to say the nose region is nothing short of ugly... T

Which ATC center should we listen to for JFK arrivals on the internet ? Could someone please provide a URL to the particular frequency that would cover the period of arrival ?

I would appreciate it if someone could explain the arrival process for this first A388 commercial flight into JFK. The big question I have is, what will JFK ops call the aircraft other than Emirates 3801?

checkmark  Interesting listening in on the chatter involving the A380; I remember one interesting exchange:

Also interesting listening to the accent of the EK pilot as well as the controller's distinct New York/Brooklyn accent. Sounded just like the controller in the infamous Air China liveatc video, I don't know if it was him or not.

Impressed with WNBC-TV New York's channel 4. They had a live feed (which MSNBC piped in as the flight rolled out) on throughout. They carried the feed on their website until the plane blocked in and then stayed with overhead shots for nearly 10 minutes after it touched down. Well done!

It was a really great time, tailgating while we waited to learn which runway, and then tearing ass in a 15-car convoy to the final location. There are more pics on that NYCA forum page, and there will be many more posted soon once people get home. We had an awesome turnout, with a lot of new folks.

I'll post the article once it's up.

Also, unrelated question, are there any penalties on the DXB-JFK route or can the A380 handle it with a full payload?

A still unrelated comment, the A380 is a stupendous aircraft, but I have to say the nose region is nothing short of ugly... T[/quote]
MAN the day you "may" have an honest look at it.. i personatl love the 380 nose and clearly prefer it over the 787s. personal taste of course, AND YES, the 380 can do DXB-JFK nonstop with maximum payload, and if you had read recent news, the Superjumbo can soon do DXB-SFO with MAX payload.

The A380 can fly about 6,700 nm with max. payload. So DXB-JFK at about 6,000 nm is doable with max. payload if strong jet streams are not a factor; however, DXB-SFO at 7,041 nm is not possible with max. payload.

Was it windy at JFK??! Even though it is a massive aircraft it looked like it was really getting blown around a bit!...Or maybe it is just my imagination!

The movement of the tail rudder made it look like they were waving the UAE flag!

22L landing does put you right over residential areas so they do sweep them around to line up with the runway - not anything as tight as 22R (that is a fun approach into JFK!) but it isn't a nice straight in route - hence the amplified corrections on approach. (coupled with a bit of wind etc.) I'd say.

Question?

How do the pilots get to the cockpit? If you look at the L1 door, it is not aligned with the cockpit. Is there a mini stairway they must climb to get to it?

I suspect that's likely to go up by a few hundred Nm in the next 4 years or so, as OEW reduces, SFC improves, and aerodynamic improvements are introduced.

By which time DXB-SFO should be pretty comfortable up to within about 10-12 tonnes of max structural payload (i.e. 73 tonnes or so, which should satisfy most needs..  Smile )

when you board from 1L, on your left the cockpit is raised a little bit by a small stair way

By the looks of the parked at the gate picture, the upper jetway is angled steeply downward to reach the plane. Quite a hike to deplane, similar to an RJ at a mainline gate.

Yeah, I love the SQ livery but it doesn't look good on the A380 at all. I think the SQ marketing department missed the boat for not coming up with a revised livery that fit the A380 better given that the A380 will be their flagship aircraft from this point on.

I don't understand-- can you or someone elaborate?
what does "sweep them around to line up" mean and what does that have to do with residential areas? And why would 22R be any different?

It means they can't do a "direct line" approach. So they come in from the water, somewhat parallel to the runway then make a 180 turn to line up with the runway. 22R is different in the sense that the turning radius is greater than for 22L.

I've never seen this done for 22L arrivals from Europe. They always come in on the ENE or PLYMM STAR and do a zig-zag over Long Island before coming towards the ILS at around 270 degrees before intercepting the localizer about 4 miles out, as published in the charts. I've never flown a downwind leg, or seen one flown, for 22L Trans-Atlantic arrivals. If you've seen otherwise, then I stand corrected, but think this may only be the case for arrivals from the West, and even then I don't know how common it is.

Thanks. That's interesting. What is a "direct line" approach and what is it about Runway 22L that makes it unable to do this direct line??

You're thinking of 13L and 13R, which do follow the curvature of Jamaica Bay with a tight right turn at the end. By the way, it's the desire to avoid conflict with LGA and EWR traffic, not noise abatement, that is the prime reason they use that approach.

22L can either be a straight-in ILS or a VOR approach offset by about ten degrees (i.e. not much). Judging by the weather in the photos, it was probably on the ILS - it would have been perfectly acceptable for the VOR approach, but they like to use the ILS when clouds are that low.
