Qantas Introduces Updated Cabin Crew Uniforms

Sydney, 18 September 2008

Qantas said today it would launch a new version of its cabin crew uniforms to coincide with the commencement of its A380 flights in October.

Qantas Group General Manager Customer Product and Services, Ms Lesley Grant, said the new colour had been created by the uniforms' designer, Peter Morrissey.

"Qantas launched its current Morrissey designed uniforms in 2003," she said.

"While the uniforms remain stylish and distinctive and are popular with both our crew members and customers, the time is right to introduce a new colour palette, in keeping with our increasing focus on contemporary design and to coincide with the arrival of the new generation A380."

Ms Grant said Qantas and Peter Morrissey had continued to work with the textile design Wirriyarra from the Balarinji Design Studio.

"Australian wool suits in black are combined with Wirriyarra scarves or ties in a new 'dusk' print - characterised by silver and blue tones - and a dusk print dress has been created for female flight attendants," she said.

"Qantas Customer Service Managers will also wear new ties and scarves, including 'platinum' box weave silver for men and platinum silver for women.

"Qantas cabin crew are the face of our airline and this updated uniform is fresh, contemporary and reflects our premium style."

In 1938, Qantas' first male cabin crew dressed in white waiters' jackets when serving dinner to passengers. In 1947, female crew joined Qantas and wore a military style uniform. Qantas' cabin crew uniform has been re-designed nine times since - in 1959, 1964, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1985, 1993, 2003 and 2008 - created by leading designers such as Emilio Pucci, Yves Saint Laurent and George Gross and Harry Who.

Looking good - almost identical to what QF ground crew wear though.

I flew Qantas for the first time in June and thought it was interesting that on our SYD-LAX flight the crew changed into a different uniform midway through the flight! Have never seen that before.

Looks like a bad dream you would have after seeing too many 70's movies. Then again what's old is new again...maybe they'll grow on me.

Is the guy with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel showing off the new pilots' uniform?

That's Peter Morrissey. He designed QF's uniforms.

The first picture is the current F seat on the 747. The second one with sweater guy is the new A380 seat.

That looks to be the current uniform. If you are referring to this picture:

Just in case you weren't kidding I guess that is the fashion designer if he isn't he should be. He has that look, yeah or the porn actor!  biggrin

I think it looks great!
I really like it, nice bright and fresh, I wonder how it goes with the red and green seats though. Domestic would be a perfect match though prob blend in too much lol  Smile
The only thing is I think perhaps the scarf and ties for the FAs may look abit washed out against a white shirt but then I thought perhaps the same, maybe the case with the CSMs but it wasn't not when I saw it actually very very classy .Preferred red though for the CSM though as it made them stand out more. The CSS will also get a pochet (the thing in the pocket) to match the tie finally which will improve their look greatly. Also remember the only versions show here are the Print dress without the jacket, I would say that all versions are in equal popularity perhaps some QF crew could clarify for us which they prefer?

The new scarf should look good against the black dress though:

Big version: Width: 251 Height: 336 File size: 14kb
.
I wonder if QFlink will get the update or be stuck with their 'ocher' version.
I think it still looks different from the ground staff there is a much deeper blue:
Big version: Width: 170 Height: 336 File size: 10kb

I remember hearing a rumour that Crew were originally supposed to get the above uniform with ground-staff the 'rock' ie blue for air brown for ground but someone stuffed up, and it went the other way, heads rolled for that if true!

The new uniforms will begun to be worn from October 20th for all crew domestic and long-haul (it's basically just a new tie, scarf and pochet for most though nothing major), not sure about the A380 crews though. All crew will under go grooming training aswell, not sure if this is in their new Sydney and London training facility's or not

The first picture is the current F seat on the 747.

It looks more modern from what I remember. Perhaps it is the fabrics that do that.

Sorry, but it doesn't look as if anything has changed. The uniforms in the images posted above look like the same thing that QF crews have worn for the past few years including the serving jackets. I fail to see anything at all that has changed. Is there some sort of press or outside website with this information?

Female outfit is awful, it sits really badly on that woman. The men's uniform is to formal and I would be confused & thought that to be a business man serving me, not to mention feeling really under-dressed since I use casual clothes when flying.  thumbsdown

The actual design hasn't changed just the colours. In the pic you posted the ground staff are the two on the left the rest are crew who will will wear the colours from the first three pics in the first post.
Thus cabin crew go from Rock to dusk or dust or what ever it is
CSM go from red to platinum

To be honest they never wear the jackets on the a/c and of all the flying i do most of the women wear what the model is wearing to the very right in the pic above.

Only ever seen a few wear the silk dress.

Isn't silk really flammable..or it smokes a ton once it lights up (and smells god-awful) or something?

All the QF uniforms I believe are treated so that they are flame retardant (so I was told) however, the more times a uniform is dry cleaned the more this wears off.

I would disagree, for the above reason full uniform must be warn for take off and landing (ie Jacket) after that they wear the aprons and serving jackets inside the aircraft. Seems to me though the girls wear a bit of everything, but the black dress is the one I see the least. The print dress is obviously more common in summer, and for short overnight (doesn't need ironing apparently) then prob the pants, followed by the skirt, then the black dress but thats just my observations.

I think the black dress looks classy, shame though so many wear the pants most of the younger ones look hot in the dress or skirt...

mmm nothing like a young hot f/a wearing a silk dress especially when it's tight!

haha amazing how much you can perve in a couple hours  Wink

Actually i spoke to a f/a one day and she was talking about how you seem to sweat more in the dressed hence why they wear the shirts with skirt and the black dress. So flying in WA thats why maybe i see more of that...dunno.

I don´t think its silk. Real Silk would be far to expensive for an airliner uniform. A good Polyester looks nearly the same.

Anyway....interesting design - the female looks a bit like the LSD-trips Homer Simpson has got from time to time...

(Bizarrely it said there were no Qantas 747 cabin shots in the database!)

I believe the seats were recently re-upholstered, within the last 18 months or so.

BusinessFirst F/As change into a serving Jacket (with silver buttons down the front). They often come down the back to assist. Economy F/As take off the jacket after takeoff and wear an apron.

I actually quite like the female uniform on most of the QF girls... it doesn't really suit some of the larger ones however.
As for the suit... it is smart and in case you didn't notice, most airlines wear a suit. After takeoff when you are getting served however the jacket doesn't get worn as either a serving jacket or an apron is worn.

Compared to many other full service airlines, I quite like them. The current dress, is lovely and the new one is as well. The suits look great on the guys however, the pant suit the shorter female is wearing doesn't do anything for her, or perhaps it's the way she's standing. Very classy.

The uniforms look good....!!! New A-380 does call for a F/A uniform makeover....!!!

However on the lighter side it does look a bit 70ish ...and also the ties of the gentlemen (flight pursers) seem to have been made from the left over material of the F/As dresses....  rotfl

Hi all ... OMG ... the female uniforms look like Skippy in the middle of a bad acid trip !
I guess we'll get used to them in time.

Just a question though... this being QF in 2008, can we expect to see buttons just falling off, zippers getting stuck, and uniforms coming back late from the dry cleaners etc etc.?

Cheers, Airbear.

LMAO to the first.

Yeah I know, I spilt tea all over a FA on a recent flight! Thankfully she was wearing an apron (although it was fabric).
