Another point to note is that the Senior Manager pushing this through (it has been on BA's wish list for a while at departmental level for over 2 years) has just accepted voluntary severance as part of yet another management restructure within the In Flight Service department and is more than eager to have the GLA crew base shut before she goes.

Purely out of interest, which routes do the Glasgow based crew fly? I assume that they operate on the shuttle services between GLA-LON), but do they also fly european sectors out of LHR/LGW? Do any of them operate on longhaul services from LHR/LGW? I ask this because I was waiting at the gate at LGW for my flight to NQY a couple of weeks ago and some of the crew from our flight were speaking to cabin crew from a different flight, one of whom was talking with what sounded like a Scottish accent. I assumed that most BA crew would be based at LHR/LGW as they don't really have any other hubs as such and was wondering where else they also have flight crew based at.

I thought they flew all the AVRO (ie LCY) flights?

You'd be amazed at the number of Scots who don't live in Scotland!

It sounds like from that article on the BBC website that some of the Scotish MPs would like BA to be rebranded 'Socialist Airways' where every airport in Scotland has a large base!

It does seem a bit of a waste having crew that can only fly one route in the European / Domestic market when it is more cost effiecient to have them based out of London.

BA just can't seem to come up with other things that job cuts, base closures, route cuts, franchises termination lately... This is just too annoying!

Its a shame to see another base close in the regions but BA have been trialling the operation since August as if the base was closed and although it didnt save any money, productivity was increased.

BA have pulled out of the highlands and islands but its not as if there isnt a service there for the people who live in those areas. Flybe are a reliable, safe airline who I suspect will do just as good a job as BA did.

Now, does anyone else notice that Wille Walsh seems to spend more time in the House of Commons that most other MP's Big grin

The GLA based mainline crew only fly some of the GLA - LHR - GLA sectors.

GLA crew currently fly about 70% of LHR/GLA & LHR/EDI services - they are in effect dual based. LHR crews generally work the first departures from LHR & the last departures from GLA/EDI with GLA crew working those in between.

Unlike the former MAN based mainline crew, their contracts allow them to work through LHR & into Europe on any short haul route, but currently BA choose to keep them on these two routes.

It only seems to be BA that find it more cost efficient to maintain a small number of crew bases - BMI base crew at all of their domestic stations, as do EZY, FlyBe etc etc. - that way they do not have hotel accomodation & transport costs for nightstoppping crews (necessary for the first depatures & last arrivals).

KLM cityhopper have crew bases in Norwich, Humberside and Leeds, with a few "non official" bases in Bristol/Birmingham/Teesside and Edinburgh.

i think the most of any non british airline

For the GLA crews working on flights thru LHR and onto Europe. Now this was taken from the BA Forum 'live chat' by the Eurofleet In-Flight service Manager (so take it with a grain of salt) but what was basically said is that the option of GLA crews working thru LHR was investigated but 1) There were DoT regulations that made it difficult and 2) It would have simply taken work away from the LHR crews. Any truth in that, I don't know.
