Hi

This may be a daft question but I was just wondering about taking off from Heathrow and hopefully someone can enlighten me.
I take off and land at LHR all the time and have noticed for a while that we never seem to take off to the east towards the city on the runway that is close to the hotels on bath road! we land on it from both directions all the time but not once have I ever been on a flight that has taken off to the east on this runway. Again, I have taken off in both directions on the other runway many times but not this one.
Just an observation and I am no expert but was just wondering why this is the case!
Cheers

Departures are not permitted off Runway 09L under the Cranford Agreement, see link below:-

Other members more familiar with LHR may be able to give you more information on the policy and any exceptions, but this is essentially the reason for the lack of departures from the northern runway during easterly operations.

Hope that helps!

The Cranford Agreement is the reason - albeit an unwritten agreement. It nonetheless forms part of the airport's operations. Take-offs are only allowed from 09L if 09R is closed. Nonetheless, while 09R is the take-off runway when easterlies are in use it can receive some landings, particularly for planes headed to Terminal 4.

Thanks for the info! I never knew about that Cranford Agreement! I just always wondered why we never took off to the east from the northern runway but guessed it must be something to do with noise! So now I know...
