SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA - news), the world's largest plane maker, on Thursday said it had booked a firm order for five 747-400 jumbo jets to an unnamed buyer.

Seattle-based Boeing lists the 416-seat 747-400 at $200 million per unit, though catalog prices are routinely discounted.

The unidentified buyer will hold a press conference on Monday, said a spokesman for Boeing.

Boeing has now booked orders for 11 747-400s so far this year and a total of 133 commercial jet orders across its product family, though cancellations and order conversions reduce the net total to 106.

Boeing last year booked a total of 609 commercial jet orders, though executives have predicted slower sales in 2001.

Nice.
And interesting:
The B744 has 11 orders in 2001.
Last years sales hit B777 only 1.

LH has an option for 5 B744, and they urgently need an expansion to their longhaul fleet. However, I have doubts that it's them, because of the struggle with the pilot now taking place...

That the customer will held a press conference is a sign that this order comes from a more unusual customer than SIA or LH.
Maybe freighters for Air France? Cargolux?

I hope it´ll be a real surprise customer!

Weird. Why is an airline keeping it as a secret that they bought 5 Jumbo jets?!? Whoever it is, they should be proud.

Weird. Someone orders Boeing's flagship and there is no info on their homepage?

Weird. Boeing has 11 B747-400 orders this year. 9 of which are from an unnamed customer.

I think that the airline that ordered the 2 B747-400 has also ordered an 777-200ER, the order is from the same day. What airline could that be?

What airline ordered 2 B747-400F? Cargolux? AF? Korean Air Cargo?........

and now this 'stealth' order.....
weird.

Hoping for more info

SailerOrion,

I'm not sure about the 747s, but the buyer of the UFO 777 on Feb 27 is Air France.

Boeing just announced its first quarter results for 2001, thus the need to "get these on the books."

Traditionally, they let the airline bask in the publicity of announcing their order, prefering to remain in the backgroung until officially announced by the airline. It seems this is the case here.

NW perhaps?

Could it be Alitalia? or maybe it is JAL?

I would think it could be Alitalia, however they did cancel an order for the same number and type of a/c last year, maybe they have gone for the -400ER instead?

SailorOrion, Northwest was the only CONFIRMED 747-400 customer this year. THEY orded the 2 named 744's.
I would not be suprised to see Northwest ordering more this early!! Honestly.
It could be JAL, Alitalia, etc. I know Malaysian has some on order, not sure how many though.
It might be Quantas!! It'sa good bet!

perhaps it´s Lufthansa after all, trying to appease boeing for a soon order of the a-380!!!!!! just kiddin´
however, flight international (3-9 april) states that LH is reported to have signed a letter of intent for 10 firm oders plus 15 options.

however, i doubt it´s alitalia, before they get 744s, i assume they´d get their 773 which they´ve got options on.

Among the airlines being speculated, I can tell you with certainty that it would not be Alitalia. Alitalia ordered 5 B744s last year, but after the failed merger with KLM, they switched to the B772ERs with options on the B773ER.

Dynkrisolo,

And VS got them on the cheap.  Smile The planes supposed to be delivered to Alitalia are now to be added to VS' fleet starting this summer.

My guess is that the order is for LH, given that LH may use these extra 744's for more service to the USA.

according to republic, i understand that a possible scenario for this or other order by unidentified cusotmers could be that boeing wanted this order on the books but the customer didn´t want to make it public just yet. so both boeing and this customer profit from such a deal. boeing´s got more orders and the customer can wait to make the announcement whenever they please.
ok, i really don´t want to annoy anyone by my posts, but i came up with a scenario that might seem logical.
i could really see that these 5 744s could be ordered by Lufthansa because they´ve still got 5 on options and other board members seem to share this opinion. think of it. Lufthansa is having its annual press conference on April 27 2001, that´s next friday, during which they´ll disclose details on the annual results in 2000. so what better date to announce additional, or even major aircraft orders? so much publicity!!!! some people assumed that if LH decided to buy some a-380s they will make it public during this annual press conference.
so this way boeing has this order on the books, but LH is not forced to make this order public before this press conference...
we´ll just have to wait and see...
... you can count on tha´t i´ll keep my fingers crossed, and not only about the 744s...

if Lufthansa just hadn´t these conflicts with their pilots´ union...

Yes you are correct about Malaysia Airlines (MAS) having an order. Ironically, they have 5 on order (which were ordered back in January 1996 for their fleet expansion program). MAS is plagued with financial problems, so I doubt it would be them since they are downsizing their operations.

Cheers.

I read this news today, check it out:

--------------------------------------------

Boeing adds unannounced order for five 747-400s
Boeing has added a firm order for five 747-400s to its order book for the type, but has not yet disclosed the customer.

The order brings to 11 the number of 747-400s ordered so far this year. Northwest Airlines has announced an order for two, but customers for the other nine remain unidentified.

Likely possibilities include China Southern Airlines, known to want new Boeing 747-400F freighters to launch its own dedicated freighter operation next year instead of wet-leasing 747-400Fs from Atlas Air; and Air France, said to be interested in acquiring longer-range 747-400s like those ordered by Qantas.

-------------------------------------------

So wait til Monday, and we'll all find out! Big grin

Regards,

Wolfy

Possible customers:

UAL
JAL
Atlas
Cargolux
ANA
NWA

Most of these airlines could expand a few routes using the 744s. BTW, is this an order for the 747-400LR or 1988 744? I would wonder why anyone would still order the 1988 744 when they can get the new one. ??????????
