Antonov Airlines' AN-225 just departed Peoria, IL (PIA) for Ontario, CA about 30 minutes ago. It's carrying Caterpillar generators for Tsunami relief.

There's some video here, but some mistakes (Airport Director's last name is Olson, not Wilson)

What is the routing from Ontario? Non-stop to Samoa?

Why Ontario? Is UPS flying it the rest of the way?

I wish I would've known about this ahead of time, I would've made the drive down to Peoria to see this!

I am guessing that the landing fees are cheaper and that ONT has more room for this beast on the tarmac while it refuels.

After ONT, the plane is going to HNL. The generators are for Tsunami relief.

Dang. If I'd known about this earlier I'd have told my dad to go down there and see it. As far as I know the next largest plane to fly there was Air Force One, and the largest planes there regularly are the ANG C-130s.

PIA has had visits from USAF C-5's and Volga Dnepr AN-124's. Not recently, though. Air Force One visited in January 2007, July 2008 and February 2009.

I would love to see the AN-225 in person. It's still in ONT, but I'm a pretty far drive, over an hour from there, and ONT is far from the best airport for spotting unfortunately.

If only this plane had flown in 2 years ago when I was working on the ramp!  Smile

I touched it, and got to walk inside of it when it stopped in ONT for gas back in 2000. It's an awesome plane to behold.

They'd better hurry up if they're going to beat the massive departure rush from the Nascar race which is about to end.

It picked up more equipment while it was here in Ontario. A Northwest 742 was here yesterday as well and continued to HNL, was it transporting troops for this as well?

Update: It was ready to depart ONT for HNL, however after an extended delay while in position on runway 26R it returned to parking due to an FMS failure. It looks like it will be here at least overnight. The crew just deplaned with all of their baggage and were taken to an area hotel.

Hi Everyone,

This morning while getting ready to leave the house (8:10A) I heard something BIG overhead. I rushed outside and looked up and to my surprise there she was busting through the clouds. (about 4500 feet) I had no idea she was in So. Cal. and just so happened upon the unexpected event. Traffic departing to the north or down to the South Pacific turn off the Brackett / Pomona VOR and fly right over my home in San Dimas. Well guys..... this was a first for me and brought a BIG smile to my face!

Interestingly, former CART / F-1 / current NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya snapped a picture of the beast while departing ONT after the race yesterday and posted it to his Twitter (Twitpic) account. He (correctly) captioned it "world's biggest cargo airpane". I know JPM is big into flying model R/C planes, so he probably knows a bit about aviation.

She's in HNL now! Took a drive down to see it land but she came in early.....Just as well b/c they parked her at the hardstand closest to the UA employee lot which has civilian access up to about 100 yards before the secure area. She is HUGE and has soooooo many wheels. Her front door went up and I swear it was higher than the tanks in the fuel tank farm next to it. Absolutely beautiful in all her shiny glory. Forgot my camera though and the fence was in the way but I'm sure one of the HNL Rarebird spotters will grab a pic of her.

HaYnFlyer, I went down this morning too and got a glimpse of her. Raining on this side of the island, but under blue skies and sunshine out there she was truly magnificent! I did not get a picture either, but with as immaculate as the day was, I am hoping one of the other spotters got in on it! It's mass only made known when you saw people walking on the ground on side of it and in through it's door. Otherwise it is deceptively large. Definitely an awe inspiring site!!!!

Checked out the behemoth on the ramp here in HNL. Talked to one of the pilots, they are departing for Samoa at about 0200. The gensets are inside 2 containers that are loaded on board with mere inches to spare between the top and sides.

Darn, I forgot about this. I meant to drive out to the hardstand to check out this aircraft. I've been up close to the AN-124 many times, but never was around to see the AN-225 the previous times it has been in HNL.

PIA runway 13-31 is 10,104' X 150' in length. We also have 4-22, which is 8,003' X 150'.

It also didn't have that big of fuel load, probably the reason for the stop in ONT to fuel up for the 5+ hour trip to HNL

Many airports have runways that can handle the beast. Parking it may have been more of a challenge.

Yeah, it parked on 4-22, which, of course, was closed for the duration.
