I'm not going to name names because I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I was told last night that some former TZ executives are working to try to restart the airline, in the form of a non-scheduled-service operation.

While I'm a former TZ employee, I'm certainly not holding my breath on this one (I think it's quite sad how Pan Am v2, 3, 4 have IMHO dirtied a great name). But, I gotta ask - anybody know any more about this?

Fat chance. Does anyone know who owns the name? I would think the creditors... And, why the heck would anyone want to start an airline in this economy??

It would be nice if they did start up again, but I think the chances of them surviving is slim to none. Maybe if the economy was in better shape and people were still traveling.

They lost their main bread and butter, military contracts. Would they just turn into an ACMI airline contracting for who ever needs them around the world? I don't see much profitability in charters especially in this economy

I am aware of this and its not a re-start of ATA, but a new charter airline by several ex-ATA employees. The ATA brand and intellectual property are owned by WN as they purchased what was left in bankruptcy to get the LGA slots and I doubt they would sell the name.

There have been discussions over the past year, but of course, the main hurdle here is financing. What I understand, it was proposed to start as a small one aircraft narrowbody operation and grow from there, but I am skeptical this would be successful especially now. If someone is willing to provide financing, which this crazy industry always seems to dig up, then it certainly would be interesting to watch them make a go of it. I don't think I'll re-join however.

In that case I own a part of it. It would be great to see the TZ flag in the air again, but I too remain highly skeptical. Even if the former TZ execs do launch their own carrier, it will not be called ATA. The ATA we all know and loved is most likely gone forever.
