Turkish Airlines Press Department just announced an order for 20+15 737NG.
The order will be a mix of -800 and 900ER. Deliveries will start 2011.

This surprises me after the crash. I honestly figured they'd drop Boeing like a rock, simply due to bad blood.
I'm glad they haven't. But that's because I know the 737NG to be a remarkable (albeit commonplace and boring to the eyes) airplane.

Above is the link from the TK site which splits the order; 10 x 738 and 10 x 739ER between 2011-2014, and 15 mixed options between 2013-2015.
I am not surprised about more 738s but they just ordered 321s and now 739ERs.
Oh well call it political, call it the more the merrier... congrats to TK and Boeing. I am happy to see TK ordering 77Ws, 333s, 332Fs, 319s, 321s, 738s and 739ERS. I guess if it goes like this we will add 787s and 350s to the list shortly.

TK must be fairly unique in ordering not only A32x and 737NGs at the same time, but also comparable versions (738, 739ER, A320, A321)!

Further, their A32x are V2500 powered too, so there isn't even any commonality with the engines...

Stil, they're growing fast so hopefully can build up economic fleets of both types.

Today they also ordered 20+10 V2500s:

This is so great!
I can see myself driving down I-5 and seeing TK 77Ws and 738s lined side by side at BFI. Now if we could add few 787s to the line up it will be awesome.

I have flown on a TK A320, A321, and B738s. It seems that they use the Airbus aircraft more for intra-Turkey flights, as that was the only place I have ever flown on them. They seem to use the 737 for regional international flights. The Airbus aircraft seemed to have much tighter pitch with the Boeings having a little more room for the longer flights. I'm sure there are exceptions, but that was just my experience, and would seem to make sense.

Great news for Boeing and I'm happy to see yet another customer for the 739ER. Although many on here are making a big deal out of the split fleets with different engines, and this being purely political...my response is, so what. It's the world we live in. At least TK will have a diverse fleet  bigthumbsup . On a side note, how many A340s is TK still operating?

Thanks for keeping the thread on course;
TK operates;
-9 x 340s
-7 x 332s
-4 x 319s
-22 x 320s
-21 x 321s
-4 x 734s
-7 x 737-700s
-51 x 738s
-4 x 77Ws
-4 x 310Fs
a total of 133 frames.

Also TK has orders for:
-6 x 319s
-14 x 321s
-10 x 333s
-10 x 738s
-10 x 739ERs
-12 x 77Ws
-2 x 332Fs
and bunch of options on those, and rumors of more 737-700s and 777Fs.

A quick search of a.net photos show that TK sends 321/738 both domestic and international destinations: I found pics of;
-321s at MAD, ARN, AMS, LYS, BEG, TLV, NUE, LHR, PRG, BCN, BRU and bunch of Turkish destinations.
-738s at FRA, MXP, TLV, AMS, BRU, OTP, BCN, ARN, DUS, BHX, GVA and bunch of Turkish cities.

I guess 739ERs carry about the same number of pax in 2-class as 321s. Correct me if I am wrong but 739ERs have 500km more range in similar configs than 321s? And how about cargo space comparison?
I think TK will use these 739ERs to Central Asian/India/Pakistan/North and Central African destinations.

Thanks ZRH. I was just trying to make a point that doing a quick search at the photo archives I came up with a lot of cities. I am aware of the fact that 738/321s are used for many other destinations and are interchangeable.

Cargo-wise the A321 will have the edge as it's slightly longer and wider. Range-wise you are correct, but the A321 also carries slightly more passengers. So the saying one is better than the other is kind of a wash.

Yeah I noticed the thread was beginning to stray a bit into politics. I thought I heard rumors of TK replacing their A340 fleets with RR powered A332/333s...is this true? I hope not, because I really like the A340, and they've still got some years left in them. I actually quite surprised to see that TK hasn't ordered or put out an LOI/RFP for either the 787 or A350. My guess is like the rest of their orders, it will probably go 788/A359 and perhaps 788/789 and A359/3510 when the time comes.

The oldest 343 is 16.5 years old. Most of them got refurbished recently and I have a feeling none of them will retire before 2014, and if they do, 2-3 a year past 2014. Besides 2 ex JM birds, all of them are paid for and they have the range to fly most of TK's long haul routes. I doubt that the new arriving 77Ws and 333s will replace them. 343s will stay in the fleet for the time being on long/thin routes whereas 77Ws will take over the long/prestige routes, 333 will do medium/workhorse routes.
As you might know TK has been postponing this 787/350 decision for 3-4 years. The latest date is June 2010. Keep ordering from both A and B makes both companies willing to give deals on their aircraft. It might still be a split when announced. Many of us thought that this was win for 350 until TK ordered the 77W. Now I say back to 50/50.

With both acft selling well (not to mention the delivery delays on the 787), they wouldn't want to hang around for too much longer.

It was hardly the fault of the acft and I'm sure TK knows this.

Just like when they ordered few dozen A 319s and A 321s two months ago, I am once again stating my opinion which is that this massive fleet expansion by them is a bit unreasonable and they are biting off more than what they can chew !

what is the point of ordering B 739ERs when u already have A 321s in the fleet !!!

The Airbus order was last month.
You are absolutely right. TK fleet is at 133 frames now, and TK have 69 orders and at least 25 options for more for the next 5 years. All I can see leaving in the next 5 years is 4 x 734s, few oddball 319s/320s/321s/738s (total 10 or so) and maybe the 4 x 310Fs. But I am sure even this year we will see another single aisle order, 787/350 order and a possible more 332F or 77F order.
IST is having a hard time recently with traffic and will be a mess in a few years.
I guess we will wait and see.
