Topic: Why Did TG Order A345/6?

I was just curious as to why TG ordered the A345/6 and also a fleet or 772/3? It know appears they are also going to be leasing some 77Ws from 9W (who isn't nowadays?). It seems that 9W is leasing more 77Ws than they even had to begin with. I digress though...

I know other airlines operate the A340NGs alongside 777s. CX, QR, EK, EY all come to mind. I have even asked why this is in specific threads and never received a particularly satisfying answer. However, this leads me to my original point. It seems they chose a rather diverse fleet, with the A345/6 and until now only the 773A. Now with the leasing of the 77W, perhaps someone can shed light on the methodology of TG and other carriers who fly similarly competing aircraft. (Don't even get started on airlines that fly A32X and 737NGs).

Other posters here will have their own opinions on this issue but I can say that TG has operated a mixed fleet for years. The situation has not been helped by TG's frequent changes of management.

By the way, it's incorrect to say it "appears" TG will be leasing 77Ws from 9W. The deal has actually been confirmed on 9W's website:

A345, IIRC, was the only available a/c on the market for TG to fly BKK to JFK nonstop (at the time the service started).
Same goes for SQ's SIN to EWR.

The first 777s were ordered a long time ago as where the A330s. Adding the A340NGs means a fair bit of commonality with the A330s both in terms of engines and airframe (though granted not as much as the A343). Adding the 77W would mean a similar airframe to the other 777s, however, a whole new engine type.

Now that the 77W has come a long way vs the A340NGs since those days though, it must make more sense to take the hit of a new engine type and benefit from the better economics.

TG does have a history of having more aircraft types and even engine subtypes than most airlines though! engine etc commonality never probably even factored into this airlines thinking!!
