According to aviation newsportal aero.de Lufthansa's third A380 D-AIMC (MSN 044) will be named "Beijing" (German version: "Peking"). Allegedly Lufthansa also wants to use Chinese ideographs. The plane is scheduled to be used between Frankfurt and Beijing from late August.

http://www.aero.de/news-10609/Dritte...ansa-erhaelt-Taufnamen-Peking.html

It will be interesting to see whether the report is true. I think it would be a good idea to regularly name LH planes after foreign cities, too. Foreign city/continent names have only been used on an A340-300 (D-AIFC "Gander/Halifax") and several 707-300s and 747-200Fs.

"Frankfurt am Main" and "München" were chosen for D-AIMA and D-AIMB, apparently in reference to LH's two main hubs. Probably Lufthansa wants to name more A380s after current and future A380 destinations?

It is true - future D-AIMC has been already seen in Finkenwerder with the title "Peking" and with Chinese letters.

I don't like that. If they'd follow the usual procedure, they would have named MC "Hamburg", after their biggest domestic route out of FRA. LH could have named their first aircraft after hubs/focus cities in Germany, and THEN name them after foreign cities.

Totally agree. I think LH should concentrate on honouring its home market first before pandering to others. Putting it in Chinese script also seems a bit extravagant.

I think putting the name in Chinese script is a nice way to honour the international market as LH doesn't want to be seen as a German airline only, but as an international carrier.

Sorry, but I'll have to disagree with your call for Hamburg. Just because HAM is their biggest domestic route out of FRA, doesn't qualify to give DAIMC its name. If LH would have continued their idea of naming their A380s after German cities of importance to their network, DUS should have been their 3rd A380: only airport besides FRA and MUC with LH-longhaul service, most regional/continental connections aside of the 2 hubs. A mini-hub.

So, without any doubt, Lufthansa's 3rd city in Germany is Düsseldorf. If any German city was to be found on DAIMC's belly, it should've been Düsseldorf.

BTW, before any kölsche jung feels amused by my post, I live in Essen, I hate the city of Düsseldorf, I was born in Bonn. So if I personally had to choose between Düsseldorf and Cologne, I'd take the Domstadt.

That would mean a huge break of tradition.I personally would like to see them stick to german cities.Düsseldorf,Cologne or Hamburg would have been more appropriate.
Gander and Halifax however derserve to be honored this way because of their important role during the SEP11 diversions....

If this turns out to be true I guess we might see a "Tokyo","Johannesburg" or "New York" sooner or later.

Peking is just the official name for the Chinese capital in German. Just like Genf (Geneva), Mailand (Milan), Singapur and Kapstadt (Cape Town) are.

Point taken, but still Hamburg should have then been fourth, and I stand by what I said about naming planes after foreign cities. German cities should take priority first, then foreign cities when it comes to the names.

Correct, though some names did change in the German language. For example I believe the city of Guangzhou used to be known as Canton (and the Chinese spoken there is still known as Cantonese), but we now call Canton by its correct name, Guangzhou (no idea if the name is in Mandarin or Cantonese though).

Honestly I thought the third one will be Berlin. But I agree with CptRegionalJet that very likely New York, Toronto,, Johannesburg or Tokyo will be the names of LH A380s.

I like the idea! Why name the plane Berlin / Cologne / Dusseldorf where the A380 will never even go? I expect a lot of protest from the more conservative people at Lufthansa though.
In real life, however, it will not be easy to fly a dedicated plane of the fleet to one destination. I guess they will be rotated around depending on maintenance / late incoming equipment / various other operational reasons.

This is in stark contrast to past Lufthansa policy. However the baptizing of their planes has nothing to do with the destinations the planes will serve. Or have we ever had Lufthansa planes land in cities like Ulm, or Ravensburg, or Gelsenkirchen?

Of course LH will continue to use German city names - actually you currently do find all big German cities on LH aircraft. However, instead of renaming numerous 747-400s it seems they simply chose a different approach now for the A380. The "German city names first"-policy would mean in the end that they could use foreign city names only for regional jets - and that wouldn't make sense at all.

That's a completely different issue. BA changed its corporate identity, LH's A380s will simply wear relatively small stickers.

that's in Mandarin. in cantonese it'll sound more like "Gwong Jao"
