I believe some years ago there was LHR-YYZ service. Any chance this or any other Canadian city could pick up?

VS will take delivery of 5 new A333's between April and September 2011 with another 5 due for delivery in 2012. If there is a announcement to be made re VS returning to YYZ I cant see it being before the S12 timetable.

Hi

Virgin use to fly LGW-YYZ, I think this end after 9-11.

I'm not sure that Virgin will ever restart YYZ. Virgin at least in part tend to fly to leisure destinations. Toronto already has BA, AC and near daily TS services from the UK, also the VFR market from the UK to YYZ is not what it was 15 or 20 years ago.

YVR might have more of a chance in that it a big tourist destination for Brits and in the past few years people from the UK migrating to Canada seam to be heading to the west coast.

The chance of VS comming back to Canada is about as likely as seeing theese threads dissappear.

As much as I would like to see it happen, as I love VS, YYZ has a lot of LHR / LGW service as is, and I don't see them starting off at any other city.

Sorry for any dissappointment.

I thought they had all but said they will start LHR-YVR next year, or was I imagining that?

A thread like this appears very often and was discussed in the Virgin America thread recently. Branson has said he definitely would like to be back in Canada. But it has to make economic sense. He is here on a very frequent basis for various charity and business functions so the market is not unknown or unnoticed.

The reasons it could be quite awhile are as follows:

* As stated above the LHR/YYZ route is quite saturated now and significant charter competition to other airports
* LHR has more competition for transfer traffic with Jet connecting through BRU, TK, EK, EY, continued strong AC/LH through FRA, etc.
* Canadians are more conservative in purchasing first class fares, as demonstrated by AC's J Class only
* The biggie is that slots at LHR are too constricted for more YYZ when other routes are higher priority
* LGW is viewed more as a leisure destination
* London traffic has been soft following the economic downturn and slower to rebound.

This topic was discussed only last month both in its own thread and also in the VX thread on their new flights to YYZ. I also beleive it was touched on in the montly "VS to join Star Alliance/Skyteam" thread we seem to have. A quick search will show the plethora of threads on this subject.

The route was started just before 9/11 it was operated ex LGW using 742's and was stopped shortly after 9/11 along with the ORD and ATH services. Of course ORD has returned to the VS fleet (albeit in a half attempt) but YYZ has not.

As others mention YVR has been mentioned a lot (along with Rio) however with the first 330's being based at LGW/MAN it wont be until 2012 before a new route ex LHR is opened using the newer aircraft.

You are correct VS do fly to a number of leisure destinations however these routes are not the bread and butter of VS. The higher yielding routes and more business orientated routes are those flown ex LHR (JFK, EWR, LOS, ACC, DXB, NRT, HKG, PVG, SFO, LAX etc etc). So to imply that VS will not start a route because they tend to fly to leisure destinations in rather misleading. Yes VS operate to MCO, LAS and BGI however the vast majority of routes from LGW are once a week services and are mainly operated due to Virgin Holidays.

i dont think you can include MCO in that list because VS operate 6 daily flights there peak season; 3x LGW 2x MAN and 1x GLA. In low season its still 2 daily flights.

I didn't if you re-read my entry I excluded MCO. I said that the vast majority of routes ex LGW with the exception of MCO, LAS and BGI are operated once a week (or at least with much lower schedules that hint at that leisure orientation). I was implying that MCO/LAS/BGI are operated more frequently which of course they are.

And FYI its not quite six flights a day at MCO from VS. If you look at the schedules its more four a day during the summer. The GLA service operates three days a week, the second MAN only operates once a week, and the second LGW service operates 6 a week. And the third LGW service is not operating this summer, well at least not for July or August according to the VS timetable on their website.

I'm not sure why this would be bad for VS since it only has J/W/Y, no F.

- Very good point.

I don't think VS are in any hurry to return here or start GIG either.

the second MAN only operates once a week

Twice a week, then 3 times a week from August with next year being 4 weekly.
