I was on a flight today from ATL-EYW that diverted to MIA due to winds at EYW. But that wasn't the most interesting thing that happened. When we were lined up to takeoff out of ATL, a Southwest plane landed right before we took off? Does anyone know why this plane was in ATL?

It was a medical diversion and parked at the Midwest gate on the D concourse. Not sure who handled it while it was here but undoubtedly it was probably FL. I will find out when i go into work tomorrow/ Btw was this the first time a WN plane has been in Atlanta?

No, not at all. Been there several times via diversions and charters. Also, it was N794SW, a -700.

This might be a separate question, but just so I am clear as my wording may have been a bit misleading. MY plane was diverted to MIA. The SW plane was diverted to ATL and landed in front of MY plane taking off.

Coincidentally that was Spirit 1, haha the first 737-700 delivered in the Blue colors!

Why? I wouldn't think it was FL unless FL was the cheapest. (and i'd bet that DGS was the cheapest)
Just because an airline plans to merge with someone doesn't mean anything in these case.

It was a medical diversion and CO was the ground handler from what I heard here in ATL. WN comes in here several times a month on a military charter - sometimes parking at E, sometimes at D.

It is not as simple as that.
The merger has just been announced - they are no where no recipcle ground handling agreements or anything else.
To get back on topic - looking at Flightaware, must have been a serious medical emergency as they could not finish the last 45 minutes and continue to the destination. Was on one recently going into EWR where the doctor was able to stablize the patient - lost conciousness for several minutes and we continued on to EWR. It happened around PIT - got straight in clearance to EWR and medical staff was awaiting us at the gate.
