Topic: Thai´s 777s - (strange?) Configuration

Thai´s 777s operate in what I´ll call a strange configuration. The 777-200s have a total of 358 seats (55 Business/303 Economy) while the 777-300s have a total af 388 seats (49 Business/339 Economy). This makes a difference of 30 seats between the models. It seem a bit strange to operate both types when you only gain 30 seats per flight. Anyone knowing why??

If you compare with e.g. SIA´s 777s where the -200 have 288 seats (12 First/42 Business/234 Economy) and the -300 have 332 seats (18 First/49 Business/265 Economy) the use of both types make sence. I am aware that the difference on SIA´s 777s is also minor, but SIA however have more First and Business seats on the 777-300 which of course occupy more space and may be more useful on certain routes.

To me Thai´s use of the 777-200 and -300 in the current - almost identical configuration - makes absolutely no sence.

Cheers
Thomas

The only thing I could think of, is if one coonfiguration allows for a lot more cargo space. It might be economical for them to have more cargo space istead of passengers.

Pdg1781 - you may have a point there. But still I haven´t been able to find any other airline with 777-200 and -300 configured almost identically.

The 777-200s are configured in the 10 abreast ( 3-4-3 )seating configuration for domestic and short haul routes. While the 777-300s are configured in the standard 9 abreast ( 3-3-3 ) eating configuration for some of the longer routes, e.g. BKK - SYD or BKK - ATH.

The B777/200 of Thai is like the Lauda Air ones with half of the economy cabin with a 9 abreast (3-3-3) and the back part with a 10 abreast (3-4-3).
The B777/300 is all 9 abreast (3-3-3).

It's always a very strange configuration, but I flew Lauda on VIE-BKK-VIE on a B772 and I sitted on both configuration cabin and I didn't find a big difference.Just the aisle is smaller in the 10 abreast, but the seats are still good.

Airblue: the whole economy in the 772 is 3-4-3, and it isn't that bad at all.
The 773 has 3-3-3, and new and cool seats

I think SQ have more seats. is because in Economy, they only have 31-32" of seating space... Thus, can stick in an extra row of seats!!

But with TG, they have 34" of seat pitch, thus, having to take out a few more rows of seats!!

Does anyone have any diagrams or links of Thai's seating configurations?

Thai's business class on the 777-200 in a dreadful 2-4-2. Their 777-300 has 2-3-2. So they are basically squeezing another 10 J seats which is probably the worst config I have ever flown on. Their 777-200's are mostly destined for Asia routes like to TPE, SEL, HKG etc. The 777-300's go to OZ and India.

Thai's 777 seating configuration generates lots and lots of complaints that they have announced a plan to reconfigure the whole 777 fleet!

The seat pitch on Thai 772 is not as generous as 34" on their 747. I guess 31" or 32" is more like it. The 2-4-2 configuration in 772's Business Class cause many passengers to be furious since it's not what they expect for a business class fare. 773's business class is good.

Thai cabin crew even give Thai 777 a nickname of "passenger fighter jet" which when translated into Thai would mean "the plane that drives the passengers away!"
