Well, my favorite show of all time has out done themselves. Their recent Christmas special features incredible flying by the Ilyushin Il-76 carrying James, Jeremy and Richard Hammond and three convertibles. Enjoy the video while the cargo doors open mid flight...the camera catches the rest of the action. The action begins at 3:26....enjoy this rare glimpse inside the IIyushin, what a beauty!

Moderators, please keep this is the civil forum as the airplane is carrying civilian passengers!

I've never been more embarrassed watching a TV show. I got a call telling me "top gear is on the history channel!" I had no idea there even was an American version- I cannot explain how terrible, cringey, pitiful, and un-funny it was. On behalf of all Americans, I'd like to apologize to Britain for making such a mockery of your show, and I sincerely hope it goes away soon.

I feel that way about every US remake of a British show I like. Most of the time the remake sinks quickly without a trace (Life on Mars). Every once it a while one manages to survive more than a season (Three's Company, The Office, etc.). The only thing I can attribute that to is random chance.

I did happen to see the Top Gear Christmas special, and it had some good footage in it. But on the topic of Top Gear US, it seems to be getting much better in the last few weeks, rather than the first 3 episodes. They've done some amusing challenges and what not, and have had some decent cars on and whatnot. People who wanted the same show aren't the market for Top Gear US, so perhaps maybe you shouldn't try to ruin it for those who do enjoy the show as it is.

That's definitely true and a great deal of the attachment to the show (whichever version) is really down to the hosts you get familiar with first. I've been watching the UK version for years now and clearly the chemistry between Jeremy, James and Richard is what makes the show for me and my family. Saying people watch the show for objective reviews of the cars is a bit like saying people watch The Bachelor for dating advice!

That said, I have watched a few of the Australian Top Gears and had a somewhat similar reaction. Not quite as bad as the US first show, but nothing I would go out of my way to watch. Didn't much care for the presenters but was familiar with the route around Melbourne they were using for one of the races so I enjoyed seeing places I had been.

The current Top Gear UK hosts have 15 series together under their belt. Over those years they've gelled together and is it really fair to compare a show that has had the time to mature (*snicker*) and polish itself with one that is just getting started? Watch the first series of Top Gear UK and tell me it's as epic as, say, Series 7 or Series 10.

IMO, Top Gear USA launched stronger than Top Gear Australia and Top Gear Russia did. I've not really seen any chemistry with the TGR crew and while TGA's second season was stronger than it's first, NINE has not done the show any favors with a third presenter change in as many seasons.

TGUSA's team are building chemistry. Yes, they are recycling skits we've already seen on Top Gear UK, but the TGUK team is, to my knowledge, helping to write TGUSA's scripts.

The Christmas Special was great. Those guys have arguably the best job on the world. They are very good friends, hence they gel really well and it shows in front of the camera.

They lost a lot of the humor and none of the hosts is outspoken enough. It's just three guys making canned but still mediocre one liners.

I've missed the last few episodes, but I think the show's hosts seem to lack polish and audacity. Tanner has the car knowledge and skills (perhaps too much so, as challenges are one pro wiping the floor with two amateurs), Rutledge is a big dumb hillbilly, and Adam just cracks one liners as if he just walked off the set of CSI Miami. No mocking ecotards, no proper Stig intro, etc. That said, there is no reason that the show shouldn't work in America. Also, I would add that it is on the wrong channel. The show would probably do much better on Discovery Channel where it would fit in well and probably find a common audience with their science-entertainment shows like Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs. Even MTV might have made an interesting home for Top Gear America.

Most of the first season of The Office was more or less a straight conversion of the British version. The American adaptation took a diverging, and in my opinion better, trajectory from the second season on.

For the record that was a RUS Aviation aircraft and the filming took place in Erbil. The crew didn't fly in from Georgia as suggested in the show though, they just boarded in EBL did a few circuits around the airport and landed again. I guess the presenters flew into EBL on one of the scheduled carriers flying thee like OS?

...on the subject of being outspoken, is that ever *really* going to be possible when the programme is funded by sponsors? I mean they can hardly rubbish a car when it's being sponsored by it, or relying on advertising revenue. I guess this must something that many 'consumer' programmes must suffer from in the US.

I'll play fair. I was brought up on the original, so naturally it will always be my preference. We get to know the characters as if they are our friends. Watching the US version almost feels as if I'm cheating on my mates. I guess I could say the same for those who begin with the American Top Gear.

James is irreplaceable. His laid back attitduude and somewhat old school approach contrasts beautifully with Jeremy's hammer on ice approach. Richard is the most American of the group with his love for muscle cars and almost red neck lifestyle.

In terms of bias car reviews, I can't help but to admire Jeremy's brutal honesty in his reviews. Car and Driver, Road and Track and Automobile magazine are hopeless periodicals in the US. When I stumbled upon TopGear magazine, I was sold on its humor, wit and to-the-point reporting on cars. These guys have a complete disregard for who makes or provides the cars they test. They just want them to possess a fun factor. If it's absent, then they tell the manufacaterer to go back to the drawing board. This is how reporting should be done.

In regards to the latest holiday episode, I was simply amazed at the aircraft stunt. I think this is the only time we'll be able to see what an acutal go around looks like from the back of an airplane. Can you even open the cargo doors on a C130 on take off or landing? Would it even be allowed? Is the Ilyushin Il-76 a powerful aircraft by todays standards?

I've been on a C-130 when we've done a LAPES drop (Low Altitude Parachute Extract System). You basically fly about 5 feet above the drop zone and let a parachute pull the cargo out the back. I've heard of landings with the back open when going into a fire zone and the troops have 30 seconds or less to evacuate but never been on one.

Give the three guys on the American version some time. Once they build chemistry, they will come good. They are just beginning to work with one another. I'm sure the first season, JC, RH & JM weren't the best of buddies. Most of the comic relief we get is due to the wonderful chemistry b/w the three. The challenges so far on the American version have been decent. Obviously not the original Top Gear UK; but still its not bad for a start... Give them time, and they will come good...

I gave up on TopGear Australia from the start, the US version has gotten better and better by each episode. Give it some time and it'll improve. The race to Key West is the highpoint of the series for me, so far.

Wow really? You must be from a blue state. Rutledge is so much like middle-America, where the real target market for the show/channel is. Honestly, he's the best thing that the show has going in regards to hosts. Of the three, he seems like the most fun to hang out with.

Totally not true. They have very few good things to say about the Honda CRZ in the last episode.

But, to keep this aviation related in someway, what did everyone thing about the Lotus vs Seaplane vs Boat race. Granted, it was very similar to what they did in Europe, but still was an enjoyable segment.

Sorry but its not about just chemistry. ORIGINALITY comes to mind as well. These guys and their producers couldn't do it to save their lives. They went to test 3 older cars and did the same exact shit as top gear uk. pathetic,

And therein lies part of the problem. if you are going to re-run skits from Top Gear UK people are of course going to make comparisons. If they want this show to be 'stand alone' then they need to get a little more creative and come up with a few more original ideas.

From what I've seen the chemistry between the presenters just isn't there - they don't seem to have the verbal jousting skills, the sense of irony, and even sarcasm that has made TGUK such a success and frankly they seem a little awkward. Without that I'm afraid it's like making a pizza without the cheese.

The Il-76 has a certain reputation for underpowered take-off. Which is odd considering the Il-76 engines, the Soloviev D-30, are pretty much the same than those in the MiG-31.

I clicked on this thread to read a discussion about the video, not the different versions of the show. This seems more like a Non-Aviation thread than an aviation one, no thanks to the posters here.

As far as the video goes, is that a normal approach into an Iraqi airport? I know the Baghdad landings are a circle and dive bomb routine, but is the go around part of the routine too? Or was it just a pass for the cameras?

I would not be surprised if both the BBC and The History Channel wished to leverage some of what they felt worked with TGUK to launch the new show, giving it a bit of a "local" spin. They followed much the same program with the launch of Top Gear Australia and Top Gear Russia.

Again, JC, JM and RH have been together for 15 series. Watch Series 2, Episode 6 and see how much "chemistry" they had six episodes in.

The US version is too dull to be watched.

Landing in Baghdad does not require you first make a low pass or at least it did not about four months ago. That was, I suspect, done for the cameras; but you do come in very high and make a dive bomb run on approach.

The engines are quite different actually, despite the D-30 designation. The Tu-134 is also powered by D-30s but only have something like a 15% commonality with the ones on the Il-76/Tu-154. Basically, three different engines, same common root name

I watched it and thought it was pretty cool. I love it when they do challenges with airplanes. I recently watched the one where they ran some cars behind a virgin 747 at full power to see what would happen. I couldn't help but think about what would happen had it been a 77W with GE90s instead.

Here is a great top gear clip with Captain Slow riding on a U2 spy plane.

About Top Gear US:
It has a long way to go till it's anywhere near the level of TGUK. But it is new so I'm going to continue watching it and hope it gets renewed for another season. Yea it sucks right now but I want Top Gear to succeed in the US so I'll continue to support it. It's still way better than most of the car shows on tv and perhaps it doesn't seem so awful to those who haven't already seen TGUK (most americans).
