I spent last weekend in Poznan and read in a local tourist brochure that the local airport will be expanded to make it the second largest in Poland after Warsaw. I don't know if this means that the entire airport will be expanded or only the terminal facilities. Since my hotel was under the flight path, I noticed that air traffic has increased in the last few years, but it's still rather small since Poznan only has a population of 600,000. Incidentally, I saw LOT and EuroLOT ATRs, LOT ERJs, and an SAS Dash-8 up above. Does anyone have detailed info about the expansion plans?

Dzien Dobry Polakow!

I'll try a second time--Does anyone want to comment on the expansion in Poznan and the development of Poland's secondary airports?

Given the polish population (almost 40 mill. people), economic growth, geographical distances and future membership in the EC, Warsaw and its airport won´t be able to handle all international flights.
I am sure that Poznan will have links to all major hub airports in Europe within the next years.
By the way, what about Cracow´s airport and possible (long-distance) flights? Some years ago LOT had the same flightnumber from Cracow to JFK, but of course you had to change planes at Warsaw.

I believe that there is a flight from New York to Cracow via Warsaw. Other Polish cities have flights to European destinations, but airfares remain beyond the reach of most Poles and so the flights are on smaller aircraft. Only Warsaw can be considered a busy airport.

What happened to the summer Krakow charter? Last year there was a 2 or 3 times weekly Krakow-YYZ service.

Krakow for past two or three years have NON STOP flight to Newark NJ. In summer they fly on saturdays in fall, winter and spring on mondays.
I can assume you that Poznan wont be 2nd largest airport in Poland. That role was already assigned to Krakow around 1995. POZ will have flights only to Scandinavia and Germany. The transatlantic traffic in 70% is from Eastern and Southern part of Poland so Poznan is out of the picture.

I thought ORD also has service to Krakow; I was 2 LOT 767s at O'Hare last month.

Right now LOT has nonstop service from Krakow to ORD (4 times a week), EWR (once a week), and JFK (once a week).
