Just another question, when did they acquire these and when were they retired? How many did they have in the fleet and where did they operate from?

They were, I believe, acquired from Air Cal after AA acquired the airline in the mid-80s (1987?). AA also aquired some BAE-146 and MD-80 aircraft from the buyout.

Can't tell you how many 737s AA had in their fleet, though. Maybe someone else can enlighten us?

Slightly incorrect. AirCal's MD-80s had already been replaced by 737-300s when AA bought them in 1986. AA did not operate any ex-OC M80s. Six of the M80s went to CO and the other went to US.

Please check older forum topics to see mine on American Airlines 737-300s. Richard Silagi was then kind enough to upload several photographs which you can find in the database.

American picked up the following aircrafts from the AirCal buyout.
2 - 737/100
19 - 737/200
8 - 737/300
6 - 146/200
Hope this helps. Regards.

The AA/AirCal 737-300s were leased to Southwest for a while and later sold to Meridian Trust Corp., FSBU and Pegasus who continued the outstanding WN leases.

The pair of AirCal 737-100s were not owned outright, but were leases that were not renewed by AA when the term was up.

Most of the AA/AirCal 737-200s have been broken up by now, but some have had interesting fates.

The cockpit and tail of N462AC are preserved and on display at BWI.

N461GB is used as a fire trainer at PHX airport.

AA also leased some 737-200s from Aloha during the period when Crandall was trying to get the unions to agree to B-scales back in the early 80s.
