Looks like Lion Air is not done ordering yet! They planning another order in February.. There is no comment on aircraft type?

"Indonesian low cost carrier Lion Air plans another aircraft order in February 2012, and stressed that its November order for 230 Boeing 737-family aircraft is binding.

"In February next year we will sign another order," said Rusdi Kirana, president director of Lion Air. Rusdi declined to provide any more details of the planned deal.

Any Lion announcement could be timed for the Singapore Air Show that will run from 14-19 February."

Well now that they have 300+ narrow bodies on order, they need the same amount of wide bodies to compliment!

Looks like we have found the low cost Emirates of Indonesia!!

Wow, it looks like JT will firm up their November order in January for those 230 B-737s, including 200 B-737MAXs. Could they place another order for the B-737MAX in Feb.? Or would they consuder the NEO? Or could they be looking at a big B-747-8I or B-777-300ER order? JT already has two B-744s, with about 500 seats that it flies to JED and other international locations. Indonesia, even though it is made up of thousands of islands is spread across some 3500-4000 nm and pretty much strattles the equator.

When it comes to this airline, I will believe it when I see it...

Is this related to the new premium airline they just announced?

Since their comments seem to stress the 5000 mile breadth of Indonesia and their network, maybe they will be looking for a plane capable of serving any two cities in the region non-stop. The MAX will not have that type of range. Could they be looking at some widebody options? A350 seems like overkill at this point in their growth. Either 787 or A333 possibly?

I don't have the link handy, but I think you are on the right track.

As far as others speculation on the BIG birds... I can see a few new Hajj runners? But, I don't see a large WB order in February...

Not this many! Looks like they're trying to become the FR of Asia, an aircraft broker that happens to fly a few airplanes on the side.

I'll be shocked if either the existing MAX order or any new order has any variant in it except the 737-8, which is the easiest and most lucrative to resell.

In my opening post I included the following link:

And, that seems to be a possibility regarding their future plans....

Perhaps it is for something like an Embraer E-190 class of airplanes to serve the smaller cities in the domestic network more efficiently?

I don't think Lion Airlines is able to utilise its existing widebody fleet optimally except during the short Haj season and logically is not going to put any more good money into expanding this segment.

The E-190 did make a sales tour to Indonesia sometime in October 2011.

They do have a couple of 747-400s in a high density configuration for charters. It could be an order to replace or supplement those (the order may not be for new aircraft). Other than that, I don't know what else they'd order unless they want to get in a battle and get an A330 sized airplane to compete with the growing Air Asia X network as Air Asia seems to be their primary competition.

Quoting mffoda (Thread starter):

The most interesting quote is will they actually commit to the order when they announce it

"I don't think the president of the United States wants to witness the signing of a non-binding agreement," said Rusdi.

So a "non-binding agreement" - an MoU to reserve some production slots?

I know... But that doesn't stop the Trolls from trying to tell their version of what other people "really" said or meant...

Quote:

This is the prefect example...

The Airline itself, tells us that it is a "Binding" agreement and they refer to it as an their "Order" and that they will sign "Another Order" and yet we get the constant anti-Boeing drivel that they are not really orders???

Quoting mffoda (Reply 13):

Let the facts speak - it's just like claims that 80 of the Lion Air MAX are conversions from existing orders, when they are not. It's also been stated the MAX orders / commitments are small. A sure sign we're at the height of the cycle when 900 orders and commitments are "small". Go back to 2002 IIRC Boeing booked only 10 777 orders all year. 200+ this year.

If you look at the last update for the 2011 order thread, those numbers tell a story about this years sales and not many are picking up on it, but I won't hijack this thread with the details as even some of the biggest name "analysts" seem to be missing it too

Paul

Looks like you are correct huaiwei. The new aircraft order in February will be for "Space Jet"... Not a big fan of the name though

"Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air is heading upmarket with plans to launch its first premium airline, Space Jet, in 2013."

I think this will be another Boeing order. Even if it is a SpiceJet order, Boeing is the clear front runner here, although I think these will be mostly NG's. If it is MAX, I would venture to guess that they will take some of those 146 NG's Lion has on order until the MAX's can be delivered.

One option they cannot take up is Australia, given past refusal by CASA to give them access to the market on safety grounds.

Theres already so much capacity planned, via AK and an expanding GA, along with so many other carriers in Asia, it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
