Hello all,
I was wondering when LH ius going to send the a380 to IAD. I saw in a picture from 2007 with a comment that said they WILL be doing it. I just want to know when.

Thanks.

Rumor has it won't see IAD but the 747-8i will be instead.

IAD isn't exactly A380 equipped. I believe the second gate used for the AF 380 is essentially a regular gate that is just elevated to the second deck, making it a relatively steep incline.

Granted this shouldn't necessarily keep an airline from flying the A380 into the airport.

While working for Lufthansa ramp this summer, OPS told us that there was basically no chance of seeing a LH A380 at IAD but there was a really good chance (almost 100%) of seeing the 747-8I sometime in the near future. How much of that is true? Only time will tell

LH and UA have such a cozy relationship that I'm surprised that LH flies the A380 to SFO. I don't think LH wants to upstage UA in their home.

Time changes everything, including traffic patterns, demand forecasts and the like. SQ's first A380 was supposed to launch on SQ001/002 SFO-HKG-SIN, but SFO still hasn't seen an SQ A380 yet. The 748i may be better suited to LH's traffic needs on IAD-FRA. Looking at the IATA S12 period, UA already runs 3x daily IAD-FRA in addition to LH's twice daily flights. Not exactly hurting for frequency in that market. I'm certain LH has identified other markets where the A380 provides a better solution for the foreseeable future. IAD may receive an LH A380 in the future, but I don't think it'll be in the cards for a while yet.

FRA is a Level 3 (slot controlled) airport, and the FAA has announced that SFO will become a Level 2 (schedule facilitated) airport for the IATA S12 schedule. The ability to add another flight isn't all that easy for SFO-FRA, especially given the distance involved. Besides, as UA and LH are both parties to the A++ revenue sharing agreement, UA will earn revenue from the A380 flight as if it were their own. This concept of "metal neutrality" also allows cooperation on scheduling, which would include aircraft type selection. There's enough demand during the summer period where UA runs a 747 and a 777, while LH runs an A380 on SFO-FRA v.v. I'm fairly certain UA was fine with LH placing the 380 on the route.
