Hi all,

According to Spanish media, AA will replace IB in MIA-BCN:

- From APR04, 5 weekly flights operated by AA, instead of the current 3w IB's 340.
- From JUN14, 1 daily flight operated by AA.

All flights will be flown with the 763, as expected. Flights are not loaded yet, but as the article includes a confirmation from an IB manager, I assume we can trust the source.

Good stuff. A daily 763 seems like an excellent fit.

Have been hearing this rumor for a while in the company. I also heard the 2nd JFK-BCN 4x week will not return.

Glad to see AA begin to rebuild its European network on its own metal. I can't wait to see what is in store for the 777s that were operating the BOM flight! I hope DFW-FRA goes back to a 777!

It was DEL, but I know what you meant. I wonder if DFW-EZE will revert to a 777 also.

DFW-EZE is a marginal route for AA, mostly for connecting traffic to take the pressure off of MIA-EZE, which has more high-yielding local traffic. I'd be surprised if DFW-EZE were to go 772 again.

This is great news! I was wondering where they were going to send the plane that operated the second MIA-LHR flight that BA is taking over in April. New long haul flights from Miami are always welcome.

Funny. Members here have argued the flight has done horrendously, yet here, a year later, it goes daily.

From the beginning, when this route was launched post ATI approval, it was clear that AA was the one who wanted to operate it, but IB had its way, and now, a year later, we see it reversed. This move proves that a smaller airplane and more frequencies would have been a better strategy, and certainly when operated out of a AA hub, and not IB from a non-hub.

Whether the services survives daily after the Summer, will have to be seen, though.

I personally preferred IB for this flight only for one reason: maybe this was just the beginning of IB coming back to BCN if the new fights had been a success, and we could have expected more destinations.

I understand that AA has a hub at MIA, but where are most passengers coming from? If it is BCN and Europe, then maybe it is not that important that the company with the hub operates it.

Anyway, good news, and it would be great that, post CH11, AA tried to open a few new routes to Europe. One to Italy and one to Germany and they would already have 6 European destinations from MIA.

Regarding BCN, can we expect new destinations from the USA with the JV? I think ORD would be the next logical choice, because it would open lots of west coast connections. As IB already flies there from MAD, they could try a 3 weekly when they have new planes in a year or so.

Any idea of where the IB A340 might go instead?

Back to the lessors.
IB has already returned one A343 to coincide with the cancelling of its flights to Fortaleza and Recife. Another has or is about to be stood down and returned, as flights to Cordoba have been axed. Another A340-300 will lost likely be withdraw from service in a couple of months. Perhaps stopping the 3 x MIA will avoid IB having to affect significantly its core routes from MAD (though there must be the odd reduction, MAD-BOG for one is seeing up to 3 weekly frequencies less).

On a random note, does anyone know which flight #'s will be the new AA 777-300 from JFK-LHR?

IB's MAD-LIM service has also lost some frequencies; IB planned on increasing MAD-SCL to 9x weekly, then suddendly axed those plans...

But it is still more than twice the capacity of last summer, so it's an important increase...

I've read that the first 77W will be ORD-LHR, but it is not confirmed and the plans may change.

If you take into account the service to JFK, the overall BCN-USA capacity on AA/IB will actually be (slightly) lower this summer compared to last:

* 2011: 11/wk 763 BCN-JFK + 3/wk 343 BCN-MIA
* 2012: 7/wk 763 BCN-JFK + 7/wk 763 BCN-MIA

* 2012: 7/wk 763 BCN-JFK + 7/wk 763 BCN-MIA

But if you are looking at the MIA-BCN market, they are increasing capacity, correct? If so, maybe it's the JFK-BCN market that is overserved?

Thoughts?

I guess I'll be taking my own food on board next time I go over to ALC in August. Eastbound I like the transfer at BCN better than MAD, although the last 2 times my parents did it via MAD the domestic sector was on a Nostrum CRK which they said was much better than IBs A32x which have criminal seat pitch if you're not in the first dozen rows or so ... or any row on the Vueling ones out of BCN.

Its a tradeoff : noisy 763 with PTV, generally good FAs and completely inedible food vs. silky smooth & quiet 343 with generally OK food (but getting noticeably worse int he last year or so) but no PTV and occasionally grouchy crew.

Seat comfort about the same on both ... AAs 763are are better than some others in that respect.

AA has been known to offer same day J class upgrades for purchase ex-MAD which I've taken advantage of in the past (and the food was still awful compared to IB J or BA CW). I wonder if they do it TATL ex-MIA?

Then they must have previously operated the 772 on the MAD route because I flew AA to MAD maybe 3 yrs ago and it had a PTV 100% for sure and I upgraded to J on the way back.

I believe you might be right. I read that somewhere as well. BA also operates their new 77W on ORD-LHR, so it may make sense that AA would also put their 77W on that route too.

AA did indeed operate AA68/AA69 daily with the B772 a while back. However, it didn't last long on the route.

And? Point is despite your entirely unsubstantiated and false claims, the route has done very well for the joint venture. And it's a winter increase as well, as winter will be 5w.

Uh? What did I claim that is entirely unsubstantiated and false? That the 763 is smaller than the 343? Or that AA is removing capacity from JFK-BCN?

Excellent news. We in Miami have been waiting for this.

Now lets keep connecting the dots and bring MIA-MXP online especially since it already is an AA station.

I feel like this flight was long overdue.

But I spouse AA knows they can make a bigger profit it on it in a year or two once their costs go down.
