True, but 1x daily won't trigger any price wars, and UA has a large enough base to work with.

I'm not sure if this is true.

This is true since B6 will be consolidating its ops at DCA with the exception of their west coast cities, JFK and BOS

I know CO started ORD-FLL and DEN-FLL just after the merger...but didn't they cancel DEN-FLL recently?

UA also has never had (until the merger) access to a partner on the other end. But with Silver Airways, formerly Gulfstream, having their base there, they should be able to draw some higher yielding connections onto those flights. Mostly into Jamaica and the near Caribbean type places.

Seasonal -- it still operates:

According to wikipedia, UAEX has a "hub" at FLL for Silver Airways which as stated leads to some high yield connection opportunities. Wonder if a LAX-FLL or SFO-FLL is next considering ORD, CLE, IAD, EWR, IAH, and DEN are already served?

Not from IAD. I suspect B6's withdrawal from FLL-IAD is the reason they are entering the market again. |

It's truly amazing that the route was going to be unserved. Makes sense for UA.

Topic: RE: UA To Resume FLL-IAD Username: iadbudd Posted 2012-04-13 13:13:22 and read 4551 times. This will be good for the Cruise ship traffic out of FLL and the deadheading UA crew members that fly out of IAD and still live down in the long since closed MIA crew base. It just basically picks up the slack of Jet Blue dropping IAD-FLL. |

NK flies from DCA -- with additional FL/WN service from BWI

To an extent, but UA will probably be targeting passengers connecting onward from IAD. NK's fare structure means that they compete more with Greyhound than they do with other airlines on their routes.

I believe the flights were marketed as Continental Connection and United Express, though the aircraft themselves did wear CO colors. Indeed, the new 3M colors displayed a clear influence.

Indeed! I was beginning to feel a little sorry for those UA crewmembers; B6 was somewhat a "UA crew shuttle" between So. Fla and IAD...
As for UA's business, any guesses on whether this route will be sustainable now that UA will have zero competition on IAD-FLL? From my experience, B6's loads have usually been pretty healthy between those two airports year-round, but I couldn't tell you how the yields were; I'm guessing DCA-FLL is knocking them out of the ballpark (or is about to).

I will definately explore UA ORD-FLL-Bahamas for my next winter vacation... |

True. And FLL-LAX also has AA and NK. I don't think they'll be jumping on that one in a hurry.
Edit: Oh, and I forgot B6.

That's correct. BOS-IAD will also be dropping in frequency, but there's still a market for the west coast that seems attractive to B6. Once the pull-down is complete, B6 will be operating 2-3x daily IAD-BOS, 2x daily IAD-JFK, and 1x daily each IAD-LGB/OAK.

B6 also flies FLL-SFO, and a few miles down I-95, we've got AA on MIA-SFO and DL also on MIA-LAX.

UA definitely has the best digs at FLL. B6 and NK's terminals are lousy.

I could see FLL-SFO with a 73G or 738 eventually....maybe.
Plus they got a United Club too that is relatively new.

Agreed. UA flies out of Terminal 1, which opened less than ten years ago, while B6 and NK use the 1980s-era Terminals 3 and 4, respectively. B6 used to fly out of Terminal 1 until they started flying internationally from FLL, which necessitated a move closer to Terminal 4 which is the only terminal that can process international arrivals (Gates H2, H4, H6, H8, H9, and H10) for when the aircraft are towed back, and now they have an entire concourse to themselves.
