As it has been recently announced that Aeroflot will commence 3 weekly flights to MIA in October, i'm wondering what teh future of the airline will be in the US market. Will we finally get a daily flight out of IAD and increased servcie out of MIA? The Russian-US tourist market grew 25% last year so obviously Americans are taking note of Russia and vice versa.

I expect there would be a huge increase in traffic if visa requirements were eased. I've always wanted to visit Russia but obtaining a visa is too much of a hassle (and expensive) when I can go everywhere else in Europe without a visa. I prefer last-minute trips booked a few days in advance. You can't do that to Russia. The same applies for Russians wanting to visit North America. Many choose to visit countries where a visa isn't needed, or is much easier to obtain, than to the U.S where they have to make a personal trip to the nearest embassy/consulate for an interview.

Is it true that Miami has the second highest Russian poulation in the US? I know that there is alot of premium traffic between Miami and Russia, or at least that is what was said in MiamiToday.

Now that SU has a larger widebody fleet including the 763ERs, A332s, and A333s, perhaps we'll see them bring back SFO-SVO with the 763ER first and then upgauge according to demand. I wish SU had decided to have their 76s fitted with blended winglets taking into consideration the stage length of the routes flown.

Does anyone know how many SFO passengers transit to SU's LAX flight?

SU is also increasing their LAX service to 5x a week this summer. I've heard pretty good things about their inflight product, catering. Like night and day compared to the past.

I agree with you. If any airline needed winglets fitted for their 767's, I would have thought SU would be the perfect candidate. Unless they have plans to phase the 767's out of their fleet in the next few years?

I'd also love to see them in SEA again, with the flights via ANC to the Russian Far East in the past, SU also operated non-stops to SVO from SEA as well. I wish only the best for SU's success to whatever destinations in N. America they choose.

I thought Los Angeles had the largest Russian population

Aeroflot's 767s will start to be phased out when deliveries of new aircraft start coming on, there was no reason to get the modifications done at that point. Airbuses now fly a lot of the key routes.

I'm sure SFO will make a comeback as the fleet grows.

Often times, people also forget to take into account a VERY influential and important consideration. The ethnic Russian population also differs greatly from the Russian-speaking Jewish community. For instance, SFO has a HUGE Russian-speaking Jewish population in the Richmond district. Many Russian-speaking Jews immigrated to the US a long time ago and settled in cities like NYC, SFO, MIA, ORD and LAX. Most of them have not been back to Russia since and don't have any intentions of going. Ethnic Russians often have ties to home and fly regularly because of various family/vacation reasons.

Basically, just because there are many Russian-speaking people in a certain city doesn't mean they are all ethnic Russians and definitely doesn't serve as an indicator that a Russian flight is warranted.

You should take a trip to Ukraine. It may not have Red Square or the Hermitage, but it has a lot to offer tourists and I think it is very underated as a tourist destination. Lots of interesting history and natural beauty. To stay on topic, may I suggest that you fly SU to Ukraine--they fly to several Ukrainian airports from SVO, and you can transit Russia without a visa. (Wasn't always that way. One of these days I hope to write a TR about my 2001 trip that was interrupted by problems with a Russian transit visa.) Anyway, I totally agree that the visa requirements are a major roadblock to increased tourism traffic to and from Russia.

Thanks for the insight, Aeroflot777. I appreciate it. At least on SU they have much better catering, than the other options from the US.
I bet you're so looking forward to the first SU 77W arriving in SVO early next year....

Russia to US grew a modest 6% past 12 months. US to Russia was flat.
UA suspends IAD-DME on 28 OCT for the first time since the introduction of the route a few years ago.
AA retreated after 1 year of operation.
DL cancelled ATL.

The perspectives of the Russian-US market are not that rosy if you ask me.
