It's got to happen and soon. With the 787 out and the 350 on it's tails, I would think Philly could draw an Emirates or Qatar and get Mayor Nutter to spear head this. I see a ton of India/Mid East traffic flow on the EWR and JFK hops, so let's get EK into PHL and make it happen!

Thoughts anyone??

With Emirates and Qatar flying to JFK and Washington Dulles, why would they fly to PHL ?

I'm of the opinion that within 20 years every major city will have a Gulf link, pretty much worldwide, thank's to the region's fortunate geographical position. But for now I can think of several destinations EK, QR etc... would chose before PHL. I'd expect to see one start within 5-10 years though.

I personally think a few actual numbers/stats rather than a bunch of "I would think..." and "I see tons of..." would help make your case for EK or QR at PHL a bit more serious. The fact that neither carrier is currently in town seems to not exactly support your cause. (And as jfk' has pointed out, both ARE already pretty close by!)

Yes, those 2 new aircraft types you mentioned are already changing the economics of flying nonstops in previously unthinkable markets but there DOES need to be a market and your post doesn't really show much evidence of that. Worldwide, there might just be a few more important, more immediate, or larger markets that will see service before PHL.

But by all means, contact the mayor with your justifications for the service and let us know what happens!

I'm not saying that it's going to happen anytime soon, but being from Philadelphia, it is always strange to me how much this city is overlooked simply because of its proximity to NYC and Washington DC. Philadelphia has the 5th (or is it 6th now?) largest metro area in the US. Larger than Washington, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, and Miami. It would be nice to have some other carriers besides US, BA, and LH flying international flights into PHL. It's not even just with airline service, obviously, but I just think that Philadelphia is often looked over

Well, being from the area myself(having lived there for over 15 years), it's no surprise to me that PHL is often overlooked. The way the airport is run, delays are constant, bad weather in the summer, the terminal facilities are really not the best(they're still old, no matter how much window-dressing they put on it). And with that, I don't think an airline like EK or QR really has much of an interest in a place like PHL, at the moment anyway. I think they're more concerned with markets that are more competitive and with places where they can inflict the most damage to current and potential competitors. Places where they can enter and dominate the market, and I don't think that PHL really fits that mold. I mean look at DTW. Has the US's largest Arab-American population and they still haven't entered the market, although I believe they are about to announce something sometime very soon, unless i'm mistaken

In line with the above comments, I think geography is PHL's biggest enemy for attracting foreign flag carriers. Other than that, terrific launch pad for US's transatlantic network.

Philadelphia is actually the 7th largest CSA in the nation behind Washington,Boston and San Francisco...

PHL suffers from being so close to the NYC area airports, I couldn't say in numerical terms how much Philly loses out to JFK and EWR for international flights but it will be a significant number. As for EK, I think PHL is in the long term plan but ORD, MIA, ATL and BOS or more likely before PHL. Also there is a chance that EK might go for a daily to EWR as well. I can't see EK going for any other cities in the US after those though.

No, its the 8th. Dallas is ahead of Philly at number 7.

My bad, I was referencing something from 2006. Thanks for correcting!

The only way I see QR at PHL in the near future is if they join *A, which I don't see happening.

It is not all about population. The immediate Philadelphia area does not have large base of companies with large corporate offices. They are spread out throughout the Central NJ, Southeast PA, and Delaware area. This is one reason (of many) that PHL loses out to EWR, BWI, etc. If you fly into IAD it doesn't take long to drive by a number of corporate offices that likely generate a large number of travelers and that is not factoring in all of the gov't travel.

ATL really doesn't have a large number of international carriers. It is just the SkyTeam partners that take advantage of DL's megahub.

SFO and MIA are in strategic areas to capture the Asian and Latin American/South American traffic respectively.
