United Airlines has ordered 100 737NG & 737 MAX aircraft with options for an additional 100. That will be one massive fleet of 737NG and 737 MAX aircraft when all is said and done.

That article just sounds like a re-hash of what we've already heard before, except the headline makes it sound like it's already an announced deal. Which it isn't, according to the actual text of the article:

Quote:
According to Bloomberg News, which quoted people familiar with the matter, the airline is buying 100 Boeing 737s with an option for 100 more,

Are they replacing the entire Airbus A319/A320 fleet with these?

Ok first I saw 75 orders and now it's up to 100.

I think what it is, it's 75 orders and 25 commitments or 75MAX and 25NG....

I'd assume, or some of the older 737s will be phased out with this order

The other 75 aircraft it mentioned were from a aircraft leasing company, not UA.

Wow, this is gonna be a huge amount of planes on order. According to wiki UA will have 240 new planes on order with this order. Wow, just wow.

No. They will be replacing most of the PMUA 757 fleet and some of the oldest A320s.

I doubt they would be tied to any specific airplane. UA has been replacing both 767-200s and 737-500s with 737-900ERs. The 900ER is not a direct replacement, but 900ERs free up 757-200s which free up 757-300s which free up 2-class 767-300s to replace the 767-200s. UA has a lot of fleet flexibility.

The current 900ER order will see the end of the 767-200, 737-500 and a lease return 757-200s. A new order will likely start to replace more 757-200s. The next oldest fleet is the A320 fleet.

UA has also commented that they are short on narrowbodies since PMUA retired all their 737s with United Express CRJs and E170s.

Not a single one. Every A320 is having its bins refit and Wifi installed.

This will be for growth and for 75 retirements.

Certainly not. I would think that the 735s would be the first to be replaced. They are newer than some of the oldest A320s but they will be two generations old when the 737MAX flies and they are the least efficient narrowbodies in the fleet.

I think AA has more aircraft on order than UA. UA does not have any albatrosses like the MD-80 hanging around their neck and is phasing in new aircraft more slowly than AA needs to.

Not at the moment. Leases on the 75's have been extended this year.

Also have to figure that at some point in the near future UA is going to have to address the ongoing 50 seater RJ crisis. Some of the 739s are likely for that too.

Yes the moment they start delivering them. A handful of leases are being extended as has been talked about in the other thread.

They won't be delivered anytime soon anyway.

And some have been extended, not all 96.

As far as I can tell, only one source (Bloomberg) has reported on this story. They say there will be a announcement by Boeing/United on Thursday. If it turns out to be accurate - those reporters have pretty darn good sources. The original byline on the Bloomberg story was Susanna Ray, but it later changed to insert Thomas Black and Mary Schlangenstein.

And now official - http://boeing.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=2342.

The final deal was for 150 aircraft - 100 737-9 and 50 737-900ER.

No surprise here. But still congratulations to UA, Boeing and CFM are in place for this order.  .

In terms of UA going Boeing, no.

But I do find it...if not exactly surprising...heartening to see the 737-9 and 737-900ER starting to really build momentum.

LionAir were the primary customer of the 737-900ER and some wondered whether the airline would survive long enough to take delivery of all the frames they had ordered. But now with DL ordering 100 737-900ERs and UA adding another 50 to the 52 they already have, that shores up the line a fair bit.

And UA's order for 150 737-9, along with ALC's 15, should hopefully shake more orders for that model out of the tree.

Per UA company release:

The 50 added 737-900ER will begin delivery in 2013, with first 737-9 MAX in 2018.

The aircraft will allow UA to replace older less efficient aircraft - beginning with subsidiary United 757 fleet being flown domestically.

The new MAX aircraft will provide a 20% per seat cost advantage over the aircraft they are replacing.

And it looks like UA has made its announcement for 100 new frames! For the sake of organization I am going to close this thread and ask that everyone continue in this thread: Boeing & UA Making MAX Announcement Today (by LuisKMIA Jul 12 2012 in Civil Aviation). Thanks!
