Topic: New International Service To IAH In 2013?

With LH bringing the A380 in August 1st for year round service, and with Turkish coming on April 1st, SAS considering IAH and with the United 787 coming in September. I think IAH will see some more growth in 2013 hopefully with some more new routes and airlines. I think Air New Zealand will be the next airline to announce IAH soon, that is if SAS does take its time to consider coming to IAH.

With UA suspending plans for service to AUK due to WN's expansion at HOU, NZ could step in to fill the gap. However I think they will have to wait for the 787, as the 777 is too much plane for this route. I wonder if we maybe could see LA/JJ start service to IAH from South America. IAH seems like it would be a good alternative to MIA for South American routes as shown by UA). Of course this may not work if LA/JJ decides to join Star Alliance as opposed to OneWorld because UA already has a decent number of South and Latin American routes.

LATAM is legally unable to join *A as AV/TA have joined. It was a condition of their merger being approved that the resulting airline is not able to remain in the same alliance as AV/TA.

That is what I understand, but AV/TA could still chose another alliance

AviancaTaca is already integrated into the Star Alliance. Therefore LAN will not join the Star Alliance and TAM will soon leave the Star Alliance.

Terminal B south almost being complete. On a sidebar, I saw in the IAH master plan of a possible enormous east terminal where the UA hangars are now. Anyone care to shed some light? how about the huge plot of land between the 8/26's? More runways, terminals? IAH seems strapped for land at the moment... Otherwise, routes switching to 787s; Airbii being more integrated to the IAH routes, I heard they will eventually use them to Mexico; TK coming; hopefully 747 service; and Terminal B north getting the green light.

The current master plan shows IAH mimicking ATL and DEN where Terminals A, B, and C are parallel concourses connected by underground or SkyTrain while D and E are connected to an enlarged central check-in and FIS that's currently in place. Furthermore D gets a finger extension that mimics E.

I guess since I haven't been there in months, has anyone seen or taken pictures of B-South? Other than MEX, CUN, and maybe GDL, what other Mexican airports could UA's A319s/A320s service? It would be nice to see a UA 744 parked at an E gate.

As for future international service, we have TK confirmed and the possible 2nd daily EK flight soon to return. I would like SQ to return back to daily. Who knows what other cities we would get. It would be nice to get NZ and SK, to start service as well as possible CA.

If NZ, SK come through you will likely see a full pattern concerning wide bodies on the two banks of the day (afternoon and evening) when including TK, with also the poss. of a 2nd EK returning. Without added gate space (or even a link from B to FIS) there is virtually no added room available to receive new flights accept morning slots for say an AC arrival from Beijing.

From a short term opportunity perspective you could likely see the charters flights that initially wanted AUS landing slots for Circuit of the America's Formula 1 in Nov. instead utilizing IAH or DFW to clear its passengers through customs and then cont. on to AUS. They are about 5 -7 of these flight coming from EU, S. Amer. and from Dubai (not to mention the influx of regular arrivals coming through IAH/DFW on commercial service the week of Nov. 13-19th). The week BEFORE Thanksgiving is going to be hell for IAH & AUS with a total upwards of 30k - 50k arriving from abroad to be at this race. Austin is expecting upwards of 150k-200k for race weekend.

Well...of course there is enough space between the 8/26s for a midfield complex - but that spacing was intentional to allow simulatneous ops, triple IFR operations. If more runway space is needed, the master plan calls for land acquisition for a potential 9R/27L south of the current 9/27. I think that will be a loooooong time before that is needed.

There are some vids on youtube of the construction. I'm flying out of IAH tomorrow so I'll get some pics. UA 744 is almost a unicorn...with one of the LHR flights going 3-class 777, it'd be interesting to see how a UA 744 could or would be scheduled into IAH. Not to mention apron space at Terminal E for the 74

The usual talk of for UA to open back SCL from IAH maybe in 2013. I much rather see UA open IAD-SCL.

As per Continental and CM gentlemen agreement CM won't be seen at IAH, at least flying the same IAH-PTY non-stop route as UA.
Houston-South America O/D market is suffering of high fares thanks to UA IAH monopoly, since TA/AV IAH flights are hardly convenient for Latin America outside SAL. So will I keep wishing HOU adds a F.I.S. to one of its gates so CM would fly E190 to Houston.

SK @ IAH, a very very long-shot; CA or NH @ IAH, interesting to see; NZ B767-300ER AKL-RAR-IAH, out of the question because of ETOPS

I'm there about once every two weeks. It's definitely coming along but certainly far from being complete. It's really nothing more at this point than a bunch of steel frames and concrete posts.

Out of the question.

If its going to happen it will IAH-AKL nonstop or nothing.

I would not be surprised to see UA add IAH-SCL and IAH-MUC in the next year or two. I don't see SK being viable, as IAH-OSL traffic is not great enough in my opinion to warrant sending 250 seats a day between the cities.
Then again, seeing as how CO was late to the IAH-Middle East ballgame, maybe LA might try to send up one of their new 787's before UA jumps into the market?

Based on comments today from John Palmer of NZ it looks like long haul expansion could take a back seat to growing its domestic services into 2013 based on operational expense comparisons stated in the below interview. Not sure if an IAH or DEN service will launch as soon as we are all hoping based the below comments.

"Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe says investing in its domestic and short haul businesses is proving more profitable than its long haul assets."

"He says Air New Zealand has been growing its domestic market and its position in the Australian market through its investment in Virgin."

"Mr Fyfe says Air New Zealand has a far greater ability to compete in those markets because it has greater control of the costs going into the short haul business than the long haul business."

"An aircraft flying to London and back, a 777-300, it costs $1.25 million to get that aircraft to London and back and over 50% of the cost is fuel, as opposed to a 737 flying Auckland - Wellington, 23% of that cost is fuel".

My gut response is *no way* because of runway length at RAR. But (surprise) NZ already flies 777s into RAR.

You know that is happening by 2015 for WN (there are a dozen threads on the UA/ Jeff Smisek douche-ness in the aftermath).
At least one of the five being built should be common use IIRC.
