I searched and didn't see anything posted about this.

Is this simply going to be showing off the new paint job, a whole interior tour, or something else?

Probably the whole enchelada! They've already Released a pic of the new livery that will be applied to it, so I guess the next step is to "officialy" unveil the colorscheme and unveil the interior.

(BTW, the new colorscheme does explain why all the pics of the UA 787s have no cheatline painted on them yet.)

Considering that UA's HQ is now in Chicago, wouldn't they fly it there?

On another note, any idea when the first revenue flight is?

I believe the pilots are all based out of IAH, as well as the maintenance will be based out of IAH as well. AFAIK all new 787s will be delivered to IAH.

I noted in the Q2 Fleet Update issued last week, that UA's 787 deliveries slipped again. Now, they will only get 4 units in 2012 and none until Q4. Previously it was 5 units with one in Q3.

It did not list whether or not the 2013 units will go to 7 788's or stay at 6 with one going into 2014.

I went to "the Hub" and I can't play the movie on my iphone. But from the pictures below, did UA change the BF seat for the 787? And I can see a couple of seats up front that look different from the others?

Also, doesn't another airline have the same BF seat?

And I doubt it was intentional, but the mood lighting in the still shot are the old UA colors!

The fleet update refers to in service aircraft....UA still expects to receive 5 aircraft this year but only 4 of them will be active in the fleet by the end of the year.

I am very excited for this and for the fact that the UA 787 is ready...which means it will be delivered soon. This will be a game changer for UA, at least in my opinion. They will be able to attract more int'l pax by flying to destinations that were too small for the 777. I have said this before, but I will say it again...the future of flight is upon us.

Think you will seen the 787 visit all stations domestically that see the 767 and above. Particular routes and such while on proving runs have not been released but I am sure they will be once the aircraft is on the property at the latest. I would also expect the s-ua policy of long haul testing with some east coast-Hawaii runs as well as they did with the first 777's into service to test ETOPS. Stretch it legs so to speak!! https://hub.united.com/en-us/pages/default.aspx will be one place to view it starting at 0830 edt.

(hadn't seen any pix of the first 727-100 that is stored on the same field lately...been moved last few days...be nice it it was there at the unveiling!)

Nice to see the config from UA themselves.

Has this been posted before? Interesting to see they are mixing a zone of E+ and E (row 23-25). I assume they have done this to squeeze in these 3 rows as there otherwise would only have been room for 2 E+ resulting in waste of space.

Fair point. However, no one (except us plane nerds) pays attention to the registration number.

In contrast, United did select an improved paint scheme just for the 787. Considering the deficit of special paint schemes in the UA fleet, that is a pretty big deal in my book.

According to UA's PR, it's the livery for the fleet of the 787's. However, I suspect that if the reaction is positive we'll see it spread across the fleet in due time. Certainly the 737MAX is a logical candidate, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see it on the new order 739ER's as well. The 744's would also be enhanced with this modification to the livery. Not that many are painted and it would mimic the Boeing 747-8I look..

I wonder how they pulled that off? 18.3 is the same as the PMCO 777 in economy. ANA economy abreast is listed as 18.5" at 8 abreast.

Seatguru also claims there will be 787-9 flights for ANA later this year, so they don't have all the currnent 787 information.

I think that's the point that some here are trying to make - it's a CO style N-number. Is that the future for the post merger UA fleet? Will all UA aircraft go to the five digit (CO style) N-numbers?

Quoting tommy767 (Reply 48):

Good point, there is a lot of hype to live up to and starting nearly 4 years late makes it an even bigger hole to start from.

I sincerely doubt it. They had the chance to do that when they started the re-paints.

I agree the CO system was and is confusing. Especially with the fine print below the reg number on all the sCO planes.

Has this been the most delayed aircraft to date? I feel like the 757, 767, and 777 made debuts in a solid timeframe. A380 I know was delayed too.

Who really cares? Why is it that there always has to be a superiority discussion between CO and UA business practices? Some are definitely justified, but this one is just plain silly.

FWIW, the combined carrier is going to have to use a hybrid registration nomenclature because they already have too many planes and a/c types! Ever notice how each tail number is referred to as a four digit number vs. three pre-merger for both carriers? I would expect the four digit combination to apply going forward out of necessity. We know that the 788s will be '09' series, so it will be interesting to see what the 789s and 350s receive when they come into the fleet as well as the MAXs.

IMHO it really wasn't confusing nor is it now, you knew or you didn't know the fleet numbering system.

Now back when they had TranStar MD80/82's, Frontier MD80's and B737-200's, PeoplesExpress and who knows what else, that was confusing. The only piece of that mix that made sense seemed to be the TranStar airplanes as they had "MC" as the end of the tail number.

That must be a typo. The Boeing claim is that at 9 abreast the 787 would have the standard 17.2" wide seat, the same as Boeing narrowbodies and the 10 abreast 747. UA might claim the seat is about the same as the 772 or 767 so that passengers will not complain about getting stuffed into a narrower seat. I think some other airlines do that.

The "CO" couldn't be used in the reg numbers because the "O" looks a lot like a 0 from what I've heard, but maybe someone else could chime in. Either way, I believe s-CO had these numbers reserved already and it really has no bearing on what reg style is used going forward.

Has the APU on this aircraft been fired up yet?

And as far as the N number goes..... Why is this such a big deal? This is going to be the format on all incoming planes into the fleet going forward. I don't see an issue with this format. Heck, WN is doing the same thing now!

According to chatter on here, you can have any color you want for the nacelles as long as that color is a particular shade of white. Something to do with thickness matching at the front of the nacelles for laminar flow. Apparently if makes enough of an efficiency difference even if small that no one wants to go a different color.

All PMCO aircraft are operated and under the jurisdiction of PMCO pilots, flight attendants, dispatchers, mechanics and other operations personnel. PMUA crews will not touch the 787 as it was not originally their aircraft. The agreements with the labor contacts states this this will be a legacy COA aircraft only, until the foreseeable future.

This is also the same with the 737-900's being delivered. No PMUA operational group will operate/touch these aircraft. This is a COA only aircraft controlled by COA employees.

So dont expect an PMUA branding/registrations/crews/maintenance...etc on these planes.

It is somewhat sad that this airline is so split labor/fleet wise. Even though we share the same paint job, website, and branding, we are two totally different airlines still.

I don't know, but I'd guess that early in CO's history they had competition for the "CA" ending on registration numbers, so they opted for the system that they used for decades. Much like US has a whole mess of endings because NW used US as the ending for many of their registrations starting before US had those letters.

It all comes down to personal preference, but I'm in agreement with you here.

I'd like to see more color in the old CO scheme, maybe replace the bottom gray with the dark blue (matching the tail). I find the swooping gold line on the UA 787 to be interesting and I still like the CO globe tail, but I would like to see more color.

I was surprised that the CO N-number system prevailed. Now I'm wondering if the newly ordered 737-900s that replace the sUA 757s will have CO style N numbers or UA style registrations (maybe I'll do a search).

Then again, that's just me.

In this case, I would expect them to be registered sequentially with the rest of the 737 fleet originally ordered by CO. They already have N-numbers reserved for the full 400 range.

This latest order placed for the 50 737-900's was placed under the PMUA contracts. The current 737-900's being delivered NOW are PMCO birds only that were ordered under the CO contracts. There is a big difference between the two orders. The PMUA order is still years away

Not sure what you tried to copy as my quote but this is what I posted:
Not completely true. The latest 50 900ER's ordered to replace the sUA 757-200's will be operated by sUA pilots.

I was responding to the previous posted who tried to say that sUA crews would not be operating these A/C. Exactly as you state the two orders are very different. Has the latest order of 737's been placed under customer code 22 or 24?

Same Y class seats/IFE that are fitted to the 764/763 2-class.

Well it's good to see the lack of any sort of creativity is still going strong at the NEW United...pretty soon they're going to install recliners and tout how new and modern they are.

Although the checkers could be worse...I just got off a DL MD-90, that blue leather rock hard seat is an embarassment.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned yet but this Boeing 787 (and all the following) will be registered as B787-822 thus dropping the Continental customer code 24, United Airlines confirmed this through Twitter today.

Yes and they'll add back "Elite Access", early 90s patterned china, text ads showing off mundane awards won, and shut down every hub but EWR.

Agree, the checkers might be a 20 year old design but its held up better over 20 years than DL's light blue seats have over 4 years. And best of all people can't write graffiti all over them like they did on the last DL 757 I flew on, all over the leather seat back. If your going to have leather seats make them dark leather so as to discourage the graffiti, B6 has learned this the hard way, switching from the light grey to dark blue.

I've never witnessed this and I was just on a DL 757 this past weekend.

At least you get FREE dish on DL AVOD equipped A/c, not the stupid DTV where you pay 7.99 for a 2 hour flight.

Looks like a 777 from the inside. I look forward to flying this bird. I honestly don't have an issue with the seat fabric or pattern...just that the cushions are so hard on the 737s. I just flew a CO 764 and DL 757 with avod and one with overhead tv back to back. Give me the 764 with the fabric. I am a big fan of leather, but the DL birds blue did look more worn.

I feel like United, at least pmUA, was always good about setting out self-service items on flights of the duration I expect the 787 will fly.

Having a dedicated bar will be nice.... but I didn't see it in the pics. I will have to look back through.

Not a big deal but it is part of the overall brand image and it looks dated. Bringing in a new airplane type is typically a good time to rethink and update some of those things...as is a merger...too bad they are retaining the check seats...at least they will be more comfortable than those plywood 737 seats.

More importantly, I think the narrow Y seats will be an issue. I know they are the same as the 747 but are less than the 767 and 777 and that is disappointing...especially with the size of my fellow Americans. I am normal sized but most of the people I sit next to are already spilling over the armrest into my seat with their girth...they can't put their arms to their side because there is no room, so they feel entitled to the armrest... rant over...

Well...it could be that the opinion that it looks dated is of the minority...and as such it was deemed something that doesn't need addressing. I personally don't have an issue with it. Of course I like the avant garde look of WN leather seats...but the check pattern on UA is if nothing else professional.

No matter if you have a 17" seat or a 20" seat, I consider myself to be quite fit and my problem has never been overweight people "spilling over the armrests" rather my problem has always been sitting next to another male with broad shoulders like myself. Each of our shoulders is usually over the armrest and no one gets to use it. That's the real problem.
