Why is there a picture on flightaware of VH-OQC landing at JFK? It's from a while back but why was it there? Was QF107/108 ever operated by an a380 or had one subbed in?

BTW, is opens up the floor to all the "when will QF send a380s to JFK?" comments!

The 380 is way too much aircraft for that route. QF had down gauged it to a 332 at one point and are now operating it with a 744 only because they pulled the 332 from AKL-LAX.

JFK was never a scheduled A380 route and I wouldn't expect it to be anytime soon.

Qantas did the same thing in SFO. It was a one time scheduled flight that had been arranged some weeks in advance.
VH-OQC arrived SFO, and later departed on the scheduled QF 73/74 on 14 Jan. 09.
I always suspected that this was done to be able to say that Qantas was the first airline to have had a "scheduled" A380 flight into SFO?

JFK could potentially go to an A380 down the line, but a 787 seems far more likely to me... They have just jumped back up to a 375 seat plane on the route (from the 220 seat A332's), while maintaining daily frequency.

Having said that, the new AA A321's might well convince QF that passengers will be happy to connect to domestic services rather than flying their own international grade product all the way to JFK.

The flight is not offered as a domestic flight in the US -- only passengers connecting to/from QF services to Australia are able to book it.

No, it wasn't, and you're right, it was a 744 before QF switched AKL-LAX to the 332 and then back to the 744 again.

I think QF flew LAX-JFK with the 380 once or twice just so they could say they had done it and as a marketing tool.

No disrespect to AA, who I think are a fantastic airline, but I really hope Qantas keep serving New York, it's important for their brand and for Australia to be there, plus it probably breaks even, I don't think it's a financial black hole anyway. I know there's a lot of freight on this route, punters I'm not sure but hopefully enough to keep it going.

What are the load factors like for QF 107/108? It seems to me that the 744 is way too much plane for that route. Does QF simply use a 744 because they already have one sitting in LAX (and they don't want to use an entirely separate plane that only flies LAX-JFK-LAX)?

If we're talking the 107/108 tag, anecdotally, I've heard they aren't that great and the PDEW numbers seem to bear that out. A vast percentage of Aussies visiting the states prefer the Socal area to NYC. The rumor is that the cargo is what floats the route and I don't doubt that.

As to why they use a 744? I believe it's lack of options in terms of size. AFAIK, at this current point in time, QF only flies the 744 and 380 to LAX, and obviously the 380 is way too much airplane for that route. So, it's either cancel the tag or fly the smallest aircraft you have on hand - the 744. And from what I understand, for QF, serving NYC isn't as much about economics as it as a matter of prestige.

The reason the 747 has returned to JFK is they have just cut the AKL-LAX A330 flight. So without a A330 in LAX it's either a 747 or A380. I also hear that while loads are poor in Economy. First, Business and Cargo loads are quite healthy.

AA has a mix of NB and WB 767-200 operating the route, the WB 767's will be replaced by NB a/c, so if QF does not use its A330 WB a/c its going all NB, so how is one NB better than another, unless you are saying that the seast are more important than the NB WB mantra.

The cargo that is currently subsidising poor passenger loads on this flight can be redirected via dedicated cargo flights at a much higher profit level. This flight was apparently all about the cargo before QF started building up their dedicated cargo network -- I do agree that it would be good to see JFK remain on the map for QF though.

Either BNE-LAX (daily, with perhaps a direct BNE-DFW to spread capacity) or the SYD-LAX flight (with flights to SFO/increased capacity to DFW with the A380 or even JQ services to the mainland).

QF doesn't offer F LAX-JFK anymore (since the A332 shift), all flights are now operated with reconfigured three class aircraft. I'd be interested to find out how W is performing...
