Allegiant and Frontier playing a game of cat and mouse now. This should get really interesting depending on the markets they decided to compete head to head in.

HARRISBURG, Penn. August 16, 2012 — Allegiant (NASDAQ: ALGT) announces new, nonstop jet service between Harrisburg, Penn. and Orlando via Orlando-Sanford International Airport (SFB) beginning October 31, 2012 and Tampa / St. Petersburg via St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) beginning November 2, 2012. To celebrate, the carrier will offer introductory fares to Orlando for as low as $64.99* one way and fares to Tampa as low as $94.99* one way, including taxes and fees. Flights and vacation packages are available for booking through January 13, 2013.

“We are pleased to bring new affordable and convenient travel options to Harrisburg,” said Andrew C. Levy, Allegiant Travel Company President. “We are confident area residents will appreciate the convenience of flying nonstop to these world class vacation destinations and the value of bundling their air, hotel and car rental reservation together.”

“We are certainly very excited to welcome Allegiant to the south central Pennsylvania region,” said Timothy J. Edwards, Executive Director. “The Orlando and Tampa Bay regions are the most popular Florida destinations for travelers throughout our area. Nonstop service to the Tampa Bay region has been at the top of our region’s request list for years while nonstop service to Orlando Sanford International Airport provides convenient access not only to Orlando, but to Florida’s East Coast as well.”

Does Frontier serve MDT now? If so, do they fly from there to Florida?

Frontier flies MDT-MCO but not daily. I think 5x for the week in the winter.

It should be noted that Allegiant was looking into LNS not too long ago:
http://lancasteronline.com/article/l...-Lancaster-to-Orlando-flights.html

LNS would have been more interesting, as it is within 50-60 miles of Malvern-King of Prussia, part of the Philadelphia market that could be sold on Allegiant, while also being within a short distance for all regions in Central PA.

I think Frontier+Allegiant is still less than AirTran or what WN could have offered to MDT.

Yes, F9 serves MDT-MCO and DEN-MDT, which is seasonal.

Wow! Cat and mouse game aside, this is welcome news for MDT! With the Frontier service already in place, this new service will hopefully make MDT a more viable option for air travel.

LNS would need major renavation to the terminal and ramp if it wants to have jets the size of an MD-80 in there consistantly. The baggage claim area is horrible, all it is is a garage door that opens up and the bags are placed on a ledge, no baggage belt. The ramp is not set up for a plane the size of a 737 or MD-80, its a tough fit to get that WN 737 in there from what I have been told. The terminal is very small and even when WN runs their charters out of there is gets very cramped very fast, not a good set up at all. The best bet would to go after Sun Air to IAD, the terminal is basically built for commuter service not large jet service. Besides I would rather go to MDT, PHL or BWI if I am going to go to Florida. All within a short driving distance.

DOT awarded an EAS contract to Sun Air, Lancaster to IAD (and Hagerstown, MD to IAD), on August 3. Apparently, according to an August 16 article on lancasteronline.com, startup date is "targeted for Oct. 15." Service with 9-passenger, Piper Chieftains, replacing the existing Cape Air, well-liked but not enought traffic for Cape Air, service to BWI that Cape Air, after serveral years, decided to end.

Of course, considering the lack of any history of Sun Air (they recently won an EAS contract for Victoria, TX, but I don't believe they've started anything just yet), I wouldn't count on that date as being assured.

As to Allegiant Air, I believe they have approached just about every small and mid-sized airport in the country, particularly an airport begging for service, about starting service to Sanford/Orlando, Myrtle Beach, etc., provided the airports bear just about all the costs and risk associated with the service, and with little or no guarantee that the service will last beyond a few months. Allegiant makes money, and if you've seen their business model and tried to book with them, you can pretty easily understand why. Just my opinion.

Low costs to Allegiant, yes (along with marketing funds). But risk? Allegiant stays away from revenue guarantees and subsidies which typically require an airline to commit to a minimum length of time in the market. G4 would rather admit they were wrong and leave a poor market quickly than rely on revenue guarantees.

F9 485 Wednesday MCO-MDT 12:25P 2:42P

F9 478 Friday MCO-MDT 8:25A 10:42A

F9 478 Sunday MCO-MDT 8:00A 10:17A
F9 479 Sunday MDT-MCO 11:00A 113P

Monday appears to be the only day MDT is not offered to Orlando on F9 or G4. For those with rental cars driving to and from the aiports SFB offers less crowds/congestion and no known road tolls. MCO is a little closer to mouse central and the other theme parks.

Last year FL was running 2 daily MDT-MCO. So total flights this winter to Orlando will be 7. G4 has had good success in Allentown .
