Well, just found this article, when reading the electronic edition of the Cancun paper "Novedades" ( sorry, spanish only http://sipse.com/noticias/174534-anu...an-vuelo-directo-china-cancun.html

It is mentioned that authorities from the Chinese province of Hainan, recently visited the Mexican Caribbean resort of Cancun to meet with local authorities. The top topic was to discuss the feasibility of commencing directs flights by Hainan Airlines, during the third quarter of 2013, between Beijing and Cancun. No further details were given, but it is mentioned in the article, that HU would be using 787-8s to run the proposed new service.

Lots of talking in the past, in regards to flights from China to Mexico by a Chinese carrier. Nothing has materialized just yet. At his time, Aeromexico remains the only airline providing direct links between the two countries ( MEX-PVG v v ).

Best regards

PEK-CUN, a 12,817 km VFR route.... That would be a first!

Even a one stop via say, MEX, would make little sense.

LOL, perhaps with almost FULL government subsidy....

BTW, the only logical stopping point would either be in Canada or the US, and I doubt any of that will happen. I'm not sure a flight could take off from MEX and fly nonstop to PEK, giving altitude at MEX.

There was a fascinating article in the last Economist about countries and cities trying to court the Chinese tourist markets. Apparently, Chinese tourists spend a ton more money than most others, and are becoming a very, VERY important demographic in the travel business. Not saying there would be a full government subsidy, of course, but Cancun trying hard to attract Chinese tourists would not be a crazy thing.

I see Hainan airlies starting services to Mexico City with the 787 in the next two or three years, and I think they would be succesfull there.

I don't know about Cancun, might be better to code-share it through MEX

At one time, HU had expressed interest in tagging their SEA service with MEX...along with KE.

Longest non-stop flight CUN has is the UN B744 from DME. And that is 10,067 km. (they use a 352 seat B744)

SU also flies SVO-CUN, which is 10,003 km, but they use an A332 with 241 seats. That's 30% less revenue, albeit with a more fuel efficient airframe.

Interesting if someone knows how these airlines are doing into CUN.

All of this being said, i fail to see how a tiny little B788 with 215 seats will perform profitably on such a long and thin segment that is PEK-CUN.

You are very right here. Like g500 mentioned, It would be more feasible to code share, a possible servicee to CUN, ex MEX with Aeromexico.

Best regards

Well, the 788 was designed for long, thin routes...

Yes, but to fly businessmen on premium fares, not tourists on cheap tickets.

My guess is the Chinese would want to fly nonstop to their destination and spend as little time as possible making connections after a ULH flight in a strange and foreign nation that is suseptible to crime.

I am looking at my calendar. Today is NOT April 1.

Could they even get 5th freedom rights between USA/Canada and Mexico? That's the only way they would have a chance to succeed on such a route, and I'm not giving that much of a chance either.

If true, this route would be even more poorly conceived than MH's KUL-LAX-MEX route. It's amazing that in this day in age, there are airlines who completely lose their minds on absurd routes.

My first reaction was this just proves the US needs to streamline it's visa process for Chinese citizens.

Or just behave like so many other parts of the world with a normal transit process sans the need for a visa, just change planes at LAX like I can go from LA to BKK via Beijing Without a China Visa.

Well, believe it or not, MH's fifth freedom sectors LAX-MEX-LAX, were averaging 90 PLF, when traffic rights were removed from the airline by the Mexivan government, back in 1998.

Yes, as absurd as it may sound to you !!!

Best regards
