What are the chances of Lufthansa flying from Charlotte to Dusseldorf with an A333. It could just be summer seasonal or daily in the summer and 3 or 4 a week in the summer

None. Especially if US leaves for One World/buys AA.

Though I have taken DUS-ORD-DUS a few times, and the loads seemed good.

I'd expect dozens of other longhaul flights out of DUS before they start CLT. They don't even serve CLT from FRA.

- US/LH do not serve PHL from DUS. Philadelphia is a much larger market itself and a larger hub for US. If any, a PHL-DUS would be first.

- US Airways' future is not clear... will it be sold to AA? Will it move to OW? If US moves to OW, there would be no possible connections at the DUS side (maybe some AB flights).

- There is a lot of uncertainty about EU/German economic prospects. Many major routes US-EU have been downgauged, lost capacity and frequencies... some others have been directly cancelled. It does not look like the best time to open a secondary-to-secondary hub route between the US and Europe.

You'll see UA or LH IAH-DUS way earlier than CLT-DUS. Especially with their B787s coming in.

While Philly is the larger market, CLT is the larger hub for US.

You won't find any ''feeder'' flights out of DUS. LH has a very clear strategy and that is O&D pays the flight, transits are gravy. Maybe LH would start a seasonal SFO or LAX out of DUS. BOS and WAS could be of interest as well, but also unlikely. BOS is too small of a market, WAS doesn't have AB flights and there are too many seats out of FRA that LH needs to fill there.

Very unlikely. However, given the success of their MUC flight, I could see LH maybe adding a summer seasonal FRA.

Where is the market? Apart from connections, which can be done through ORD on UA, which have more connections than US have at CLT.

While I'd love to have more nonstops from the US to DUS, since I fly to that region of Germany regularly, I don't think there's enough demand for significant additional service there. It's only a bit over an hour by ICE train from the FRA airport station to Dusseldorf Hbf as well, which is how I usually do it.

Interesting, because it is not the first time that LH tries to sell me intra-European connecting flights through DUS in their website. I didn't know they didn't make long-haul connections there, and it was just a "short-haul" hub.

LH feeds longhual services from DUS with their extensive European network. All l(d distance services are, like most of those at FRA and MUC, not self-sustainable from local O&D traffic.

This will continue after 4U takes over those flights which are not operated by EW/LH regional.

What I meant was that LH doesn't operate flights out of DUS that rely on the connections on the other end, thus feeding another hub. They only operate flights out of DUS that have a strong enough o&d demand for the flight to become profitable.

For example, they were trying to open DUS-NRT recently because there's a large Japanese diaspora in DUS. They assessed the market and concluded that those passengers would not pay a premium for a non-stop flight, and consequentially shelfed those plans. They could have probably filled the plane with feed, but only at the expense of their FRA and MUC flights losing feed. DUS only gets flights that bring something new to the table, ie non-stop flights between to regions that can support non-stop flights. Of course there's connecting traffic as well, but that just fills the plane up and isn't the reason for the flight.

Which is why LH will not open up a CLT (or PHL) flight out of DUS. The market between those two cities is too small and feeding other passengers into DUS would dilute the passenger volumes at FRA and MUC. As for US starting a CLT/PHL-DUS flight, I don't see any reason why they would do that. The yields are higher at FRA/MUC, the number of connections is as well.

Maybe they'll join OneWorld one day, at which point I wouldn't be surprised to see them at DUS. It would be the equivalent of DL flying ATL-DUS, just with all those AB connections on the other end that DL doesn't have.
