This is a FAA proving flight.. Sadly no passengers allowed yet. A visit to NRT is also planned soon.

Expected at 1202z at AMS. Just when I have nothing to do at work. Guess I'm going plane spotting

Any idea why UAL chose AMS as a SkyTeam hub over FRA to fly their new bird?

Here are some choices
1) less fuel to AMS vs FRA
2) lower landing fees / restrictions vs FRA, LHR etc
3) AF/KL wanted to get a good look at it, so Boeing paid for the fuel
4) AMS is more fun than FRA for a layover
5) Had cargo they could take
6) Borrowed DL's route dartboard and turned it into a Proving Run Dartboard

I assume this has everything to do with AMS being one of the first regular destinations for the UA 787's

Because that will be one of their first international deployments, on IAH-AMS. It's just temporary until more 787s arrive. The 787s are based in IAH and IAH-AMS is an easy deployment since it only requires one shell and replaces a similar capacity aircraft (764).

As long as that overwing jetway doesn't collapse on the wing, we're good.

By chance I was driving along the A4 when she was about to land! The plane looks stunning even though it's a little stubby.

Ding ding ding.

*A hubs mean nothing for these proving runs. The 787s will see regular service to IAH, EWR, SFO, LAX, ORD, DEN, NRT, AMS (among others) in the coming months. Incidentally, most of those cities have received or will receive 787 proving flights.

According to the October issue of Hemispheres, UA has to do 100 hours of non revenue proving runs with the 787. This is mandated by the FAA because they are the first U.S. operator. It may be that other U.S. carriers will not have to do as many proving runs once they get their A/C..

Please pardon my ignorance, but when does United get their next 787's? It has been said 4 to 5 by the end of this year...that's is not very far away!

Also, since they are test flying this first 787 now, will they have to equally test the second frame, third and so on with the same rigor?

They should be getting their next one in a few days, and 2 in November and 2 in December if what was originally reported by them is correct.

To VC10er,

The proving runs are only for the first frame. They have to show the FAA that they have the competency to operate the 787 both in the air and on the ground.

(They could use their later frames if they chose to do so, as this is proving their ability with the aircraft type. I doubt that they will do that, as they want to get the 787 in revenue service ASAP.)

It just takes time, just like how we all hate Facebook when they update it, we eventually just get used to it like its normal.

I'm not getting used to it. I will keep flying them nonetheless. I hated battleship for all the time it flew so I will have to grin and bear this one. The fact that the Borg planet has been on the tail since 1991 and didn't really like it that much then, I probably won't for the next 10. I'd like to see United become America's best airline, and perhaps if that happens it will sport a fresh image. IMHO.

No they will not need to fly it as much as 3904. 3904 is flying a lot so the FAA can certify the aircraft/certify United to handle the aircraft.

Nice video Martijn. Thanks for posting.

This aircraft would look so much better with the U - Tulip - on the tail instead of that fugly globe.

Also I am not enthused by their 3-3-3 seating arrangement in their whY class - even whY+.
Their "Business First" cabin arrangement does not appeal much to me either.
http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Uni...United_Airlines_Boeing_787-800.php

That alone is a complete turnoff.

 Wow!

Go compare that with the ANA birds especially their "Business Staggered" class.
They are the true Dream-liners!

Those of us onboard were eagerly watching the taxi-in as well. Parking "under" a jetway at other airports happens but with a brand new airplane, let's just say a few pics were taken of it from the inside, too!

This is not a "for hire" flight, so no cargo. Again, this was a proving run.
