The second Dreamliner. ship 0906, arrived IAH yesterday. We're getting there... Slowly perhaps, but surely.

Ordered 8 years ago and only 3.5 years late.

It does look like the 787 is finally making some headway in the last couple of months.

When are the first 50 supposed to be in United's possession now?

There is a set of 25 that were ordered by CO and another 25 ordered by UA. The UA order was later than CO.

They will have five by the end of this year. IIRC, there will be another five or so by the end of 2013. UA's are supposed to start in 2014.

Keep in mind that UA should have flexibility to change the 787 type on their orders. They are supposed to have 36 788's and 14 789. They could change that mix at some point. From what I recall, they can designate the type within a few months of the a/c being built. They also have 50 options which could be exercised within a given time frame set out on the contract.

Better late than never.  

Maybe they can get both frames in pre flight delivered this month, that would give UA 4 birds to fly with. Most probably there is a UA frame LN45 in rework that will roll out to flight line this month and maybe deliver before Dec 31..

The one time that UA flew the president on a commercial flight it used the call sign Executive 1. AF1 is only used if the Chair errr...Air Force is flying around the Prez. When he's aboard any of the other services aircraft the call sign is 1 ie: Marine 1.

The PMCO order was for GE engines.

The PMUA order was for RR engines.

I understand that the 787 was designed for engine interchangeability. Any word if COdbaUA will convert the PMUA RR order to GE?

Those are from the CO order, UA never ordered the 789.

PRUA never selected an engine type for the 787s...if you are remembering a RR engine order it was for the A350s.

Just received an email from my touroperator that my flight AMS - IAH for February 21, 2013 has been changed from 788 to 764. So disappointing! Keeping thumbs up for return flight on March 6. Does this mean that they will start IAH - AMS later than Dec 5 wirh 788?

IAH - AMS on the 787 has been postponed until February. So the first international 787 flight will be LAX - NRT.

Exactly when did airlines started to run their own FAA certification? I thought the manufacturer completed and delivered it and I have not heard any other airline running their own FAA certification.

The airline has to prove to the FAA that they can safely and legally operate the type before the FAA will allow the aircraft type to be placed on their operators certificate. The FAA inspectors watch and may call out random scenarios like diversions for weather, mechanical, or medical problems to make sure the airline handles things per the airline's approved manuals.

Yep. Happens everytime a carrier gets an aircraft they didn't previously operate.
