The South African low cost operator 1Time has filed for liquidation on Friday and has grounded all flights. This came after months of business rescue negotiations. No more bright red craft in our southern skies.

This was very sad news but kind of expected. Apparently 1Time where optimistic for a white horse investor to come on board and rescue the airline, but this did not happen so they decided to pull the plug.

Comair chief executive Erik Venter said 10 out of 11 private airlines launched in South Africa since the industry was deregulated in 1991 had failed. "Due to the less efficient fleet it operated, the ultimate closure of 1Time was inevitable," he said in a statement

I guess now with only Comair and SAA in the market we can expect prices to sky rocket.

What about Kulula? (albeit a brand of Comair),
What about Mango?

I must admit I avoided 1Time when I was last in SA. They had a bad rep and the metal was oooolllldddddddddd although according to Airfleets they'd got rid of the MD-80s and were flying 737s (with an average fleet age of 17 years).

Quite frankly, that was one of the airlines that I would never have flown. It seemed like was in the same league as that Thai MD-80 airline. I was booking an internal flight in South Africa and looked at 1Time and just didn't get a good vibe about them - very low budget airline using older equipment. Mango Air was my choice.

They lasted quite a while though and were not exactly a flash in the pan like Velvet Sky, I was in JNB in 2005 and they had been going a year or two then. They had DC9-32's at that point, was great to see them alongside the Nationwide 727.

Thank you. It has not been a great year for airline durability...

They are effectively done, but not yet officially done. The ref is still counting...

Part of the SAA group.

Overall, South Africa has always appeared to be a market with too much competition for a very limited domestic route network. 2 carriers with dual brand strategies (also the same that is occurring in Australia currently), is likely the best we can hope for in this challenging industry.

That's a real shame, I loved their planes when I visited SA a few years ago.

What an uneducated comment to make. 1Time were a great airline. They had the best on time performance of any airline in South Africa. They offered - by far - the best hard product amongst the LCC here. They were extremely popular with the small and medium businessmen. I am very sad to see them go. In contrast - Mango, along with parent SAA - have not been able to turn a profit for years now. They rely on government handouts to stay in the air (close to $4 billion over the last 18 years), and use economic terrorism to flush out the competition. The demise of 1time is more indicative of how screwed the political system is in SA more than anything else.
