After seeing both the MD82 and DC9-50 (i believe) parked side by side today in Cleveland i began to wonder what their past lives were. Anyone with info on this?

They belong to USAJet out of Detroit-Willow Run, YIP. They have a couple passenger charter DC-9's and MD-80's. That MD-80 may also be the one that U2 used for their US tour last year or whenever it was. That is a -30, they don't have 50's. They also have a couple -15's in pax config. The -30's and -15's also have cargo doors and can be converted back to freight, I don't think they have any straight passenger jets as far as the DC-9's go.

The aircraft used by Romney is an MD-83, originally delivered to AS as N949AS in 1990 and retired in 2007. It's now N949NS.

I guess the whole thing about presidential candidates that use 757's on their campaign get elected, continues to prove true.

I'm an independent, but Mr. Romney, I do like that paint job on your MD-80!

It is. The Bruins also used it for a couple of seasons; it spent an awful lot of time at BED.

Well, that was true either way last night! Romney and Ryan were both hoping to upgauge to larger aircraft but that obviously didn't happen!

Would be interesting to know what bill the candidates rack up for the month-long use of two airliner-style aircraft.

Just wondering - if one of the candidates is POTUS, he apparently can use Air Force One for his campaign travel despite it is not government business. While I understand that he should have access to his flying command post whereever he goes to, it seems a litle unfair that the challenger must fork out a lot of money for his travel needs while the president saves that money and can spent it on other campaign needs.

That's just one of many advantages a sitting President has when running for re-election.

When a sitting president is campaigning for reelection, the campaign reimburses the government the cost of using the 89th fleet (presidential fleet) for campaign stops. The campaign also reimburses the DOD for use of transporting the limos to destinations. I know this for a fact when Bush & Cheney were running in 2004.

Just an aside but this year Obama used Hillary's/Biden's 757 quite a bit since a lot of his campaign stops were at airports that were too small for a 747.

If the purpose of travel is political, part of the costs have to be reimbursed, but much less than the actual cost of operating Air Force One. Related April 2012 NY Times article.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/22/us...line-for-obama.html?pagewanted=all

Excerpts:

While it is not possible to know for sure, the Democratic Party is probably paying more than other presidents have for Air Force One because of a regulatory change in 2010. Instead of repaying the government based on the cost of first-class commercial airfare, as presidents had since Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald R. Ford, reimbursements must now reflect the cost of chartering a 737 aircraft. (Air Force One, the name for whichever plane in the fleet carries the president, is usually a 747.)

Past presidents have been accused of adding official events to political trips to reduce their campaign’s spending, but Mr. Schultz said that was no longer an issue. “The fact that there is an official event on the schedule doesn’t reduce the travel costs paid by the campaign to the federal government,” he said.

Expenses are not limited to Air Force One, which costs $179,750 an hour for “fuel, flight consumables, depot repairs, aircraft overhaul and engine overhaul,” according to the Pentagon. For years, presidential travel has included at least two other aircraft: a backup plane and a military cargo plane to ferry Secret Service vehicles, helicopters on occasion and the president’s customized limousine, nicknamed “the Beast.”

Yep. The way sitting presidents running for re-election get around this is to tie-in "official business" on these trips.

On that last campaign stop in CLE the day before the election. It showed Romneys a/c and Air Force 2 in the back ground, then Ryans plane pulling up behind the MD80. But Ryans plane appeared to be a DC9-15. I noticed the 2 over wing exits, however it seemed rather short to be a -30. Was it a -15 or 30 for the last trip to CLE?

Ryan's braver than I am.

I wouldn't want to be travelling the country in a worn-out, retired, forty-something year old airplane that was delivered the same year he was.

A short trip into a hub would be a novelty. But boarding that antique piece of junk every day would terrify me.

You'd think the guys who coughed up almost 1/4 billion for Rove's super pacs to help voters see "the light" could have "lent" them a relatively new BBJ or something!

One would have thought that since he has been doing so much to try and buy the election, Sheldon Adelson could at least have leant Romney and Ryan something from his fleet:

Yep, Obama visited LA a lot, to raise money at celebrity benefits or to go on the tonight show, but he would usually try to do something "official" to scam the country out of paying for his trips. Considering he didn't campaign here (it was a lock he'd win California unless he lost 400+ electoral votes, in which case it didn't matter), he basically ignored the people of this state unless they were rich and famous.

Man of the people...

I will say the 747-SP would be an amazing plane to watch.

I have flown on all the other types, I'd be jealous.

As other folks have said the campaign reimburses the people (nation) for the use of the a/c and fleet services during that time and it's a null benefit anyway as every few years the "other" party gets "the perk." Some US partisans love to whine about it--but it's just the nature of the beast!

It was apparently about $10.6 million to charter through a broker according to this article.
