Probably not a big surprise ...

This week here in Los Angeles at a industry event which I attended, Asiana informed local partners that it anticipates utilizing the A380 on trans-Pacific services to LAX commencing in 2014.

Also mentioned was that the carriers plans to utilize the model on regional routes with "China" named specifically. I suspect with China they really mean HKG as that is a current 744 destination.

Carrier stated its A380s will feature a "new first class suite" product that will include the worlds largest personal IFE screen (32 inches which was announced earlier this year and is to be rolled out on the carriers 777 fleet in coming year as well)

They also termed their planed configuration as being "very relaxed". I suppose they might follow KE with a low density 400'ish seating plan for the model.
For comparison OZ 744s today hold 359 but that is with the carriers denser and older angled business and non suite first products.

Asiana currently has 6 A380s on order.

This is about as surprising and exciting news as watching paint dry

LAX-ICN/Korea is probably one of the bigger markets, IMO the second largest flight market into Asia besides NRT. If Asiana didn't use the 380 here, I would be more surprised.

I would think PEK and PVG would have a great chance of seeing the A380 too. Without a top tier hometown carrier in those 2 airports, customers are more open to the competition (CX has HKG all locked up).

I can also envision Asiana sending their A380 on ICN-ORD one day.

Not surprising at all. If an Asian carrier buys A380s, they will land at LAX at some point. Simple

Vietnam airlines doesn't even fly to LAX and I'm willing to bet their A380s ( when they get them) will eventually find their way to L.A

I'm not too sure.

For PEK its a rather short hop (526miles) but OZ seems to prefer frequency - 4x daily using smaller planes like A321/767.
PVG is about the same with frequency being king with 5x daily using A320-A330s.

To me Chicago is likely down the list. Something tells me other current 744 markets like FRA or JFK be higher target for a A380 replacement.

I'll believe it when I see the golden lotus parked at LAX. VN has said to start service ages ago but nothing has been done. I believe VN intended to start SFO over LAX?

That means ICN-LAX will see 3 A380s daily!!
Will that be the only city pairs with 3 daily A380s? Or does LHR get 3 from a particular city?

Asiana will be receiving 6 A380s. My prediction is that two airframes will be used for a daily rotation to LAX, with another two for a daily JFK rotation and the remaining two for FRA.

I'm also pretty confident that they will use them on short hops to NRT and HKG in between the long haul rotations.

They should make the current service daily first.

LHR currently gets 4 x A380 from DXB and 3 x A380 from SIN daily, along with 2 x QF from Australia and I x MH from KUL giving a total of 10 a day

SIN-LHR also gets 2 x A380 from QF, making a total of 5 x A380 for SIN-LHR. Once QF switch to flying via DXB and EK29 becomes A380, DXB-LHR will get 7 x A380.

Back on topic, OZ strikes me as another "me too" purchaser of the A380. Like MH tries to keep up with SQ, I see OZ trying to keep up with KE.

Not surprising. My last flight LAX-ICN the F cabin was full of Chinese nouveau-riche types...

The last article I saw, the CEO said LAX.

Vietnam Airlines Plans LAX Service (by LAXintl Apr 2 2012 in Civil Aviation)

They are awaiting an FAA audit and were hoping to launch in 2013.

Sounds logical. Those are all big trunk routes for OZ.

Also they make sense as they all can generate lots of premium traffic if OZ indeed will have a rather spacious low density configuration which they eluded to.

And yes LAX is starting to become a busy place for the A380. Now we can have up to 5 on the ground at the same time.

They'll have to convert the MoU that they signed ages back (2009?) into a firm order first

I felt that QF's A380s are the me-toos. Since Australia is such a decentralized nation, using multiple smaller planes from SYD/MEL/BNE/PER would allow an effective and economical European network instead of having to depend on BA (before) and EK (now). At least Korea is very much Seoul-centric so OZ ordering A380 isn't that bad a decision.

I dont think Asiana needs a "me to purchase".

OZ a rather successful and well received Korean enterprise. It has a fleet of 747s in addition to other large types so moving onto a few A380s seems reasonable.

Also unlike MH or TG, OZ is not a government flag waving exercise and must account for its actions to public shareholders.

I don't think OZ will have much an issue trying to keep a small A380 fleet committed.
