Topic: DL Domestic 763 Returns To PHX

Looking at DL's current schedules, it looks like DL is running a domestic 763 on one of the daily PHX-ATL flights from now until November 26. This seems a bit surprising; PHX hasn't seen any domestic widebody service in quite some time. Is there any particular reason why is DL running a domestic 763 on the route?

Because we usually get one this time of year, or at least Delta has done it for the last four years I have been working here in Phoenix. We also often get one on a scheduled basis in February/March but it doesn't stick around too long then either. Now those nasty 757-300s on the other hand...

Winter visitors flying back to PHX and thanksgiving travel. It is nice change of scenery.

I have nothing against the 757-300 but I would rather work a 767-300 over a 757-300 hands down.

I have talked about the return of the 763 to PHX here:

My post got deleted on a similar subject, but I was checking DL's 763 schedule too and because I did not mention the source, away the post went. Anyway, now that I have mentioned I saw it on their schedule, in addition to the regular LAS-ATL route that has 763's, they are also running them LAS-MSP and LAS-DTW too. Obviously, it appears as these a/c are coming back on line more, they are running them on winter high volumes routes.

As discussed on the PHX thread, I'm flying on this route coming back from CVG/ATL after thanksgiving. DL always sends one here this time of year to cover the dreaded snowbirds

I remember two 753 flights getting cancelled at PHX, prompting DL to send a 744 to cover those two flights to DTW.

Actually it was one 757-300 flight being cancelled and the second one getting swapped to a 747-400 (which itself ended up being oversold). But it was not pleasant dealing with the 220 passengers from the first flight when there wasn't any way to get them out of town for days on any airline.

DAMN! Overselling a Domestic 744 route out of PHX....anyone wanna bring back the days where widebodies always did domestic routes to the hubs?

If DL so wished, they could possibly do this route easily with a 744 by shedding the 753 flight

Do your 753's have the magic carpet like the sCO aircraft do?

This is the one reason that I have against U.S. airlines preferring frequency over capacity: no domestic 744s! I wish DL would slash a 763 and a 752 from the ATL-LAX route and put a 744 in their place! But I know that will never happen; I'm lucky enough to have flown that route on a 77L.

Remember when NWA flew B744s between MSP-PHX for crew familiarization flights? I would love DTW-PHX on a B763 or any widebody for that matter. I flew DTW-PHX on a DC-10-40, N148US, back in 2001. Those were nice days.

I used to fly on NW DC-10-40s on PHX-MSP all the time right up to when they were replaced. I can remember when PHX would get as many as 4-5 DC-10s from NW every day right up to late 2001 early 2002.

Yes they also did MSP-MCO and MSP-LAX. I went out to PHX just to take my first 744 ride (their were only two operating in the world) and it was great. The upper deck was not in use but mid-way between PHX and MSP while talking with the friendly crew after realizing how far I had come (NYC) just to joy ride on their new bird I was invited up to the empty upper deck for the remainder of the flight as well as the Flight Deck once we landed in MSP, such a cool flight. Rather than connect to the nonstop 757 to LGA I opted to connect in DTW DC-1O-40 to a ex Republic 727-200 still with the RP interior. What a great day, my favorite NW trip.

Cheers

Yep, I also remember a disastrous flight from HNL to PHX via LAX. The LAX flight was late and our PHX flight left 20 minutes before we arrived. Well it was the last flight and we had to spend the night at LAX. Well, my father was so mad at UA that we flew the first flight out of LAX to get a connection to PHX. We flew from LAX to LAS and then transferred to TWA for our flight back to PHX. Well we flew a L-1011 from LAS to PHX.

This is one of the things that I have never understood from US carriers. Especially from larger airports. LAX, JFK, ATL ect . . It would seem that one 777 would be a better cost measure than two 757's and a 737 (or so).

200 passengers in rows 14 through 48 and only one rather narrow aisle. That and the incessent whining from the flight attendants as well as all the complaints from passengers sitting in rows 35+ complaining about that 35 minute connection in MSP they booked.
