United just posted on their facebook page they were starting non stop service from IAD to SAL. They put up this map by mistake. Is Cape Verde on their radar?? Thought this was interesting. If it is a mistake, Saturday morning is not their "A" Team.

I saw this as well. Definitely interesting.

My bet is that the graphic was made at some previous point, and someone accidentally uploaded it to Facebook or something of the like.

Yeah that is exactly what happened but it begs to question, why was this map made up in the first place? Looking into service or someone screwing around with nothing better to do on a Saturday morning.

It could just be something as simple as whoever designed this for UA originally thought they meant Sal, Cape Verde, and not SAL in El Salvador, and then whoever uploaded it accidentally uploaded the wrong file. Or maybe UA is considering fly to SID.

I would like to see UA starting CMN, it's about time a USA carrier start pushing AT, we are tired of its monopoly on the route and I am surprised why no one tried to compete with them especially there is free trade between USA and Morocco and am sure that bilateral agreements allow an american carrier to fly this route, there has been so many calls and petitions from Moroccan community for a better airline for the route to CMN

I don't see this one working, even if it is happening. There's a reason BOS is the only US gateway to the Cape Verdean Islands. However, UA would make life easier for anyone who wants to go there, as TACV's website is down and even before it went offline it seemed the only way to know their prices and schedules was by calling them up.

Is there much of a market for US to Cape Verde?

Quite a few Cape Verdeans live in the US but it would not be a high yielding route. Given that and fuel costs, don't expect this route anytime soon. Besides alliance partner TAP serves this route via LIS.

While id love for it to be true, a service to Cape Verde would surprise me.
Sure there are people from Cape Verde in the New England region of the US but the links between the US and Cape Verde are minor.

Cape Verde is heavily linked to Portugal and any service would be better of connecting through LIS.

To give an idea 80% of all Cape Verdes total trade is with the EU while 1.7% of Cape Verdes total trade is with the US. There are no oil at present either and its currency is linked to the Euro through a fixed exchange mechanism.

I believe the person saying it was meant to be San Salvador is more likely to be correct.

This is definitely service to San Salvador, not Cape Verde - UA is slated to begin operating IAD-SAL on its own metal 12/19/12: http://mwaa.com/dulles/526.htm

Yeah we know the service to San Salvador is happening and that the map was a mistake. We are trying to figure out if this image was used by UA because they have it in their cross hairs to start service to Cape Verde. It seems really unlikely that they would draw up the map all by mistake, or that the person operating the official FB page would be that far off on a route they are announcing. FB is a major means of advertising, it is very very strange and there seems to be a consensus that although unlikely this could possibly happen in the future.

Gotcha. So it seems like whoever made the graphic mistook the San Salvador SAL for the Cape Verde Sal International Airport, then realized their mistake and quickly took it down.

The only logical reason I could think of for UA to serve Cape Verde would be a tech stop between EWR/IAD and South Africa if UA flew there.

How about Cape Verde as an intermediate fuel stop on flights to deeper Africa that wouldn't support a large nonstop long-range aircraft?

Besides, service from IAD would most likely be into RAI (the national capital) rather than SID (the resort capital) which are different islands in the Cape Verde archipelago.

That's hilarious! Whoever creates the maps was likely told to add IAD-SAL to the network and they took SAL = Sal, Cape Verde!

If BOS was a UA focus city and UA had a B757 available on weekends to fly red-eyes both ways between BOS and SID thus allowing the same crew rest on the island and fly back the aircraft to BOS, I would believe it.

Didn't Delta use, or plan to use, SID as a tech-stop between Atlanta and several secondary markets in Africa

I can't imagine them doing this. No market, it's terribly expensive to do any business there, and no business demand for it. Tech stop, maybe, but no other logical reason to go. SAL is the second least favourite place I've been.

Anyone going to Cape Verde for business goes to Mindelo (on Sao Vincente Island) or Praia (on Sao Tiago Island) where the oil platforms are. Even TACV is shifting flights to VXE on Sao Vincente and RAI on Sao Tiago.

In the past, SID was one of the designated emergency landing strips for the Space Shuttle. These days SID gets most of its business from European holiday airlines.

They planned to but ended up pulling the flights before they started.
