I read on this site that Air France was suppose to discontinue LAX-PPT, but it still shows as operational as of mid 2013.

Does AF still plan on discontinuing this route?

I believe AF only said that suspension of service was a possibility if their PPT-based cabin crews did not accept AF's latest restructuring and efficiency-improvement proposals, which I believe are still being negotiated.

With the notable difference that there is no AF crew based at CUN, so there is nothing different to negotiate from any other CDG-based long-haul route. LAX-PPT is an oddball as it is AF's only long-haul route that is not based out of CDG or ORY (although it uses a/c coming from CDG via the CDG-LAX route, and has no dedicated a/c based at either PPT or LAX on a long-term basis).
In addition of being an oddball, it is also struggles to be profitable.

Maybe they are still on this route because Air Tahiti Nui is still in big trouble money wise ?

Well in reality, no one is quite sure what Air France intentions are.

The Pacific region boss first said AF would indeed drop PPT due poor economic performance, but within a few days and likely under political pressure the CEO of AF said, no they would not drop the link.

What we do know however is that AF is seeking economic improvement on the route and with their PPT base employees.

From news story earlier this week, the union and company have talked for almost 2-months but without an agreement. Next round of talks are scheduled in Paris this week matter of fact, with AF CEO personally taking part now.

AF service loss would be a blow to the French Polynesia economy especially tourism sector, but it also has a political component which could effect the outcome.

It would seem to me that for political reasons AF would not drop the link... I think this route is about service, not money
