Are there any new flights between ATL and Europe that might open soon? Delta flies a bunch of flights from ATL to Europe and there are a few airlines from Europe that fly to ATL (Lufthansa, Airfrance, KLM, Swissair, BA). Is there a chance that there will be any other flights from European carriers to ATL? Why did Austrian Airlines pull out of ATL? Delta doesn't fly to VIE. Is Delta going to have anymore ATL-Europe flights soon?

Austrian pulled out of Atlanta for the same reason Sabena, and, at the end of October, Swissar did. Without a Delta partnership there is no connecting feed and, therefore, they have to rely mostly on O&D, and the O&D between Atlanta and Vienna is virtually non-existant. The Austrian Group's US network in the first place is very small - I think it includes only JFK, ORD, and MIA. DL already flies to pretty much all the first-tier cities in Europe, and will continually use JFK to serve the second tier tourist cities (Nice, Venice, etc.). I wouldn't look for much expasion over the next year with the exception of new flights to Milan courtesy of Alitalia. Also, Lufthansa will be downgrading services to Frankfurt with a smaller aircraft (A340-200 instead of A340-300, I think), and, as mentioned, Swissair is expected to drop thier ATL-ZRH flight at the end of October. Other than that, don't look for any new European carriers. Atlanta is not a huge O&D market to Europe, and those who do fly to Europe usually chose Delta. There are very few major international airline hubs (LAX, SFO, ORD, MIA) that are able to support both the hub airline and national carriers.

Mah4546 cant you just stop it?? By now we all know that MIA is the sexiest of all destinations. Stop misusing these posts to talk about MIA.

Hey Avion, I've scolded/complemented Mah4546 on a few occassions for his nonstop Miami boosterism.

Although Mah4546, according to Hoovers, Atlanta kicks Miami's ass for cooporate HQs and corporate base.

Additionally, your O&D assumptions about Atlanta are false. ATL relies on connections just as MIA does. Your dreaming if you think there are enough people in the Miami Metro to support all of the intl flights hopping into and out of your airport.

I don't want to seem harsh but I agree with Avion. MAH4546 please stop promoting MIA, the question's about ATL so let's stick to ATL, we all know by now that you think MIA is the best.

Back to the question. I think SR should give ATL another chance. It's a big city and the last time I was in ZRH the flight looked very crowded! C'mon if SR flies to places like DXB daily surely ATL can support a daily flight!

While I do know I do promote MIA sometimes, I don't see how I did in this post. I mentioned it, yes, but I promoted it just as much as I promoted ORD and JFK. And Jon, yes, MIA does support most of it's flights to Europe on O&D and always has. Some airlines at MIA, like LTU, Air France, and Alitalia, have zero feed to rely on. The few feed to Europe MIA does get are flying Iberia and American. I know very well Atlanta has a much stronger corporate base, there is no doubting that. CNN, Coca Cola, UPS, Home Depot, the list goes on and on. But, like Marco said, this post is about ATL. ZRH is not a big destination for any US airport and DL already flies ATL-ZRH daily. And just because a flight is crowded does not always mean it's popular. A full coach class an empty first is a major problem, and, from what I hear, that is the problem with SR's ATL-ZRH flight.

ATL has little O&D travel to Europe. DL is able to sustain all of its services because of its enormous feed. An Intl. airline (minus AF) would have to rely on O&D only traffic.

Hi:

Probably Alitalia introduces new flights to ATL in codeshare with Delta specially in the ATL-MXP route. In relation with Austrian they had a agreement with Delta and Swissair called Global Atlantic Alliance but this agreement was broken when Swissair decide to start the Qualiflyer Alliance. Now Austrian is member of Star Alliance and Delta is the biggest member of SkyTeam. Also Delta serve Vienna via Paris CDG in codeshare with Air France in CDG-VIE route.

Minor Correction:
Atlantic Excellence alliance: DL / OS / SN / SR
Global Excellence alliance: DL / SQ / SR
