From Airbus on Twitter:

Milestone: >1,500 firm orders for the #A320neo family! Total = 1,515 after orders from TransAsia Airways & @interjet_mx http://ow.ly/i/17SHb

How much firm orders will the program reach before EIS in 2015? AirAsia, Pegasus and Lion Air are rumoured to buy 100 units each, that would lift the order book beyond 1800 units.

Most major carriers plus leasing companies has already placed rather large orders for the NEO or the MAX so I would guess that the NEO would reach around 2200 orders before EIS.

Fantastic news! I know it's not a new model, but already 1500 orders years before EIS is amazing.

Lion Air

Why would Lion Air order 100 A-320NEOs when they alreaty have 201 B-737-9MAXs on firm order (they were the launch customer)? JT still has some 120 B-737-900ERs on order, too.

I have no idea but it was in the news as a rumour.

There are still loads of major carriers which have not ordered either - BA, AF, KL, U2, FR, US and DL for starters, and UA will no doubt buy a lot more than the 100 MAX 9's they currently have on order.

There are also still 155 MOUs outstanding from AA, ME and Avolon.

Pegasus and Lion Air up for grabs... Fly Dubai was expected to decide on their narrowbodies this year too.

Scott Hamilton pegged them down for the NEO as well - possibly for their new Malindo venture:

For the same reason that Norwegian Air Shuttle ordered 100 neos or AA ordered 130 neos? Because they need them.

http://leehamnews.wordpress.com/tag/a320neo/

Quote:
LionAir operates about 70 Boeing 737NGs and has an astounding 337 on order. It is the launch customer for the 737-9 MAX and was the first customer to sign a firm contract for the airplane. LionAir is poised to order 100 Airbus A320/A321 neos, presumably for the new venture.

Just because you don't want something to be true, doesn't mean it isn't.

That sounds like a highly plausible explanation. Still if Lion Air would order the NEO, I would be a little bit surprised. But pleasantly surprised.  .

Touché.

And of course, more then 1,500 firm orders and quite a number of MoU's pending, and also tons of option taken on the NEO, it is a real success for Airbus. And this year Boeing is also doing quite well with the MAX. Interesting times.  Smile.

Any orders now for the NEO most likely cannot be delivered this decade. I believe the MAX is nearly in the same delivery situation, too. That is unless one or both OEMs go for the often talked about 60 + NBs per month.

They still have some holes here and there...

"The first available delivery slots in reasonable quantities are in 2019, but none of this is set in stone," Laurence Barron, president of Airbus China, told Reuters."

Good on them. It's going to be a fine plane. Can't wait to see the A321NEO.

In these times, it is amazing we've seen financing for almost 2500 new planes in 2 programs (near 1000 for the max and 1500 for the neo), in less than 2 years. Nearly 4 years worth of deliveries for both airlines.... not counting the existing NG and OE planes that they need to be delivered as well.

We're definitely entering another narrowbody bubble.

Hopefully the financiers and lessors learned their lesson with the last one, but then was some five years ago and memories are short.

True. There is a bit of over-ordering. But her is my thought. With enough improvement in fuel economy, there won't be as much 'hand me down' aircraft on the market. Before, narrowbodies were being scrapped at 25 to 27 years of age (excluding a few young examples). In today's high oil price environment, we're seeing earlier retirement. For example the scrapping the A318s and 736s. Once the NEO and MAX are out 'in number' (a quantity to debate on another thread), I think the same fate will befall the A319s and 73Gs. Not because they are bad aircraft, but in today's environment razor differences in the ability to generate revenue matter.

Note: I'm biased. My new job security is dependent of PurePower Sales.

It could be just a way to squeeze a better deal out of Boeing, but I suspect that they expect faster growth than the MAX deliveries can sustain.

That's equally as impressive since the MAX is expected to EIS 18 months or so after the NEO.

Huge results so far on this program.

I also agree though that it is not really a bubble but more a re-evaluation of the way aircraft are used over their lifespan. Remembering that many of these orders will simply replace significant existing fleets, it changes the dynamic slightly.

Slightly of topic...

Could it be doable to re engine a late frame 320 with the NEO engine and the new pylon?

The "old" engine can possibly be sold of in the aftermarket in whole or broken up in spears for a decent price.

So good are the sales of the NEO and so bad are the defections from the 358 programme that perhaps Airbus should dust off the orginal plans for the 322 and apply them to the NEO. ( and drop the 358)

Of course they are not the same planes or anything like it.But in a mid capacity sense and a business sense it might be a more profitable way to go,especially as they effectively have nothing to offer against the 788.Clearly the long range -800 has little to no attraction - perhaps a shorthaul narrowbodied super effiecient people carrier might?

With so many carirs comitting to to NEO with no doubt more to come the COO would be very attractive to these airlines.

In my CEO armchair I was disappointed that Airbus shelved the original A350 program. It would have EIS in 2010 and I believe it would have been a huge success. But launching it now, after the B787 have EIS, I am not so sure.
The different between the A320NEO and A330NEO prospect for success is the B787 IMHO.

But the A350XWB is also a huge success and vital for Airbus. With the knowledge we have now it seems that development of a original A350 (A330NEO), A350XWB-900 and A350XWB-1000 would have been bulls-eye for Airbus if they had the resources for this.

Will the NEO receive a new cabin design? Or is the current cabin design on new build 32Xs in line with Boeing's Sky Interiors? Most of Air Canada's A32Xs are 20+ years old so I have never been on any newer mini buses to see for myself.

Yes. Qatar and Republic both have them on order.

The only A32X family member that will not be continuing on as a NEO is the A318.

I flew Virgin America's A320 from SanDiego to SanFrancisco a few years ago. Very, very nice interior. It's in the same league as the Sky, sans the bins.
