Topic: Iran Air No More To Geneva Why? Username: lychemsa Posted 2012-11-21 14:10:39 and read 3090 times.I walked by the empty Iran Air ticket office in Geneva today. There was a notice at the door that service to Geneva had been discontinued.
Does anyone know why? Are there any other cities in Europe they stopped serving? |

1. Lack of demand for flights to Iran (and indeed, lack of demand in Iran for flights to GVA). The latter may well be due to a declining flying population, due to sanctions and reducing value of the Iranian currency.
2. Lack of serviceable aircraft; sanctions may also be an issue here.
3. Declining trade between Iran and Europe.
I'm sure there are other cities they and Mahan have stopped serving; as long as the current situation continues and the sanctions bite harder on the Iranian economy, I would expect to see this number grow. |

The sanctions have made IR service to Europe very difficult, and no doubt uneconomic considering the plunge in the Iranian currency and the high price of fuel (where they can obtain it). Related article.
