Thanks for this. Is it just me, or was there a lot of bouncy landings here?! What a special aircraft though, I always think of it as the 737-800´s older, sexier sister.

I never had a chance to experience the 727 (unfortunately). But I am a big fan of how it looks and after reading so much about them... absolutely enjoyed the landings.

The funny thing is I spent so many years flying around in those, I never imagined I would one day miss the sights and sounds of actually seeing them. But now I really do. It really was a versatile, unique plane. And loud -- once you got a few steps past those window exits...

The 727 has a reputation for being very difficult to land smoothly with any consistency. Of all my flights on 727s I can't recall many very smooth landings. Big contrast with the 737 which is just the opposite. They almost never bounce even with a firm landing.

Amazing video thanks for posting!!! I search YouTube for TWA stuff and never seen that one. I have been on numerous TWA 727's and miss them greatly. It's sad to think that most of those planes are either scrapped or in rough shape laying in pieces in the desert.

Thanks for posting!

I always appreciated TWA for keeping the red rotating beacons throughout its 727 fleet. Always seemed more true to the 727's character than the red strobes.

Flew on the B727 with Pan Am, American Airlines, Mexicana, Sterling Airways and Lufthansa, but unfortunetly never with TWA. Great aircraft !

Had many wonderful 727 flights on Western and Delta.

Funny, although I never flew on TWA, I always get sentimental when I see the videos. A number of friends of mine who worked with me at the airlines, had the privilege to fly on TWA. Never heard a bad comment about them, all aspects from service to food were positive. I understand why they are missed so much.

Now there's a plane that could make some real noise.

Living at the Virginia end of the Teddy Roosevelt bridge across the Potomac, on days with low cloud ceilings and the river noise abatement procedures weren't/couldn't be followed, you knew when a 727 was flying over. Power up! (Of course, the NW 727s always, always seemed to fly a more gradual slope and were perhaps the closest to our rooftops and the nosiest.)

Luv'd it, even if others were not so thrilled.

As for the TWA 727, locally, December 1, 1974, will long be remembered, not for all that good. Coming into DCA from Indy and Columbus, flight 514 was diverted to IAD (too windy for DCA landings) and clipped the Blue Ridge at Mount Weather, 1670 feet, killing all onboard. Oh, but a few more feet and no crash.

So sad to drive for some time thereafter on the Virginia state road at the crash site and see how the treetops had been sheared off. Hard to believe, this Saturday, it will have been 38 years.

Not sure about other Airlines but we deactivated our autospoilers after an incident.



On touchdown the Aircraft bounced, but the autospoilers activated after the aircraft was airborne again.


The second landing was so hard it damaged the aircraft.


From then on we always activated the spoilers manually !

Mine was in April of 2002 TPA-MIA on American.

I have flown once on a TWA 727, back in 1988, from LGA to MCO. It was a 727-200. At that time, the airlines were still flying a lot of 727s on most domestic routes.

Thanks for posting this video, it sure brings nice memories from the past. You can tell this video dates from the second half of the 90s, because TWA had already introduced its then new corporate scheme (1996) and the last 727 left the fleet in 2000. Another way you can tell it was about that time is you can see the Boeing titles and logos in the hangars, STL used to be a Mc Donnell Douglas plant for the military (for those who like fighters, that's where Phantoms, F-15s and F-18s used to be built). Mc DD and Boeing had already merged.

The nicest thing for me personally about this video is the footage of the American 727 tails, that's what brings to me my warmest memories of the past.

Since the 727 phase out from the US major airlines in the late 90s / early 2000s, STL became MD-80 heaven. It has been so, until recently when American dismantled its STL hub.

It certainly does, you get a lot of skippers like you saw in the movie. I get hot and cold streaks on it. Last week my 2 landings(first as a Captain )were both very smooth and right where I wanted them. Next week, who knows, they might be a bunch of clangers and I won't be able to buy a good one.

I've only used them on the sim, same with auto-brakes. We don't have them on our planes any more, they've been long gone.

My first jumpseat was on a B727 an Eastern B727-200 and last was on a Continental B727-200. Great airplane for sure and well deserving of many threads on a.net.

Two of our aircraft have autospoilers and autobrakes and it makes a noticeable difference on the landings. The autospoilers can save an average landing because the airplane sticks to ground so well. If you bounce it and they deploy then the second landing is going to be very hard. On long runways with the autobrakes and autospoilers activated you hardly need to use reverse thrust.

In the late 60's/early 70's walking around ORD seemed like everything domestic was DC-9's or 727's with a few 707's & DC8's thrown in on occasion. The 727 was TWA's workhorse on the ORD-East Coast routes at the time.

I remember Northwest flying 727's out of MDW on cold winter days. The 727 would run down the runway using quite a bit then would stand up and enter a steep climb out of there. Fun to watch.

Yes. Thank you for the video. I do have a question. I noticed that on all of the TWA 727 and TWA DC-9 aircraft in the video that both wings have a black stripe painted from the leading edge to the trailing edge. On the 727 it is just outboard of the wing fence. I have not seen this on any other airline. What is the purpose of this stripe? Thank you for your kind response.

Somebody once told me long ago it was to help detect ice on the wing. Not sure I believe that, but that's my only guess.

I was going to guess 1998: the St Louis Rams 727 scheme can't have been around that long so could date the video.

to me it looked like a sun glint (brief glare) .. were you thinking an engine flame/ compressor stall?

I call them racing stripes   but yes as far as I know they were for ice detection. And the stripe went from front to back on the wing, not just a section on the front and back.

They were painted on other TWA aircraft as well. Searching the A.net database I was able to find them painted after the early 90s on:

DC-9/MD-80
727
767 (outboard of the engines)
L-1011 (inboard of the wing-mounted engines)

Wasn't able to find them on the 757s or 747s, though.

This all begs the question: WHY were they painted after the early 90s?
