I was talking with someone who is, by his report, a purser at DL who has significant seniority. We were talking about aviation and DL and MSP and he said he was in ATL a few weeks ago for several days of training of some sort and he heard from senior management that it is very likely that MSP would be getting a second daily Asia destination in 1st or 2nd quarter 2014.

I know that 2014 is a long way off and a lot could change before then. I am just curious as to where people think this new possible destination would be. My bet would be to ICN with either DL or KE metal.

Thoughts? Ideas?

ICN is best bet. Most likely with KE metal. The JV with KE seems to usually prefer KE metal.

Just add another rumor to the pile.

Find you this was reportedly an FA who heard a rumor at training from presumably In-Flight Management for a rumored flight potentially starting 14-18 months out. I don't put a lot of faith that they heard much of anything credible.

That being said, yes, MSP could and likely get a second flight to Asia at some point in the future.

Whatever destination, it would be something that already has DTW service, so thats it likely to be PVG, PEK, or ICN. (Not going to be NGO as that relies on a significant amount of auto industry business, not going to be HKG which was dropped).

The rumor likely got started as DL has eluded to its hope/plans for a Trans-Pacific JV. If they do get some type of joint venture with KE, then connecting MSP to ICN would make a lot of sense and becomes that much more likely. My guess is that is where this rumor started and took on a life of its own.

I don't disagree at all. I did post this as a 'rumor' and take all these things with a ton of salt.

DTW is DL's bread-and-butter hub for Asia service, and would almost certainly receive service to any new Asian city before MSP does. Therefore, if it doesn't already have DTW, a new route wouldn't be on-tap for MSP.

DL has developed DTW as their domestic hub gateway to Asia. SEA is their primary West Coast gateway. In all previous cases MSP has acted as a secondary gateway to Asia versus DTW. DTW offers more frequent and generally shorter connections to major east coast markets versus MSP for flights to Asia.

I cannot think of a single destination that would make any sense to fly from MSP that would, should, or could be flown from MSP instead of DTW. (e.g., HKG, KIX, TPE, BKK).

Always love those 'a pilot said' or 'an FA said' statements...cockpit and jumpseat rumors have been rampant since time immemorial and it's no different in the training center. If anyone but senior leadership or route/crew planning knew about a new route then it would have been publically announced.

While this is a rumor, it sounds much more credible than most I hear on a.net. The timeframe for the service seems reasonable, and I've thought for a while that a KE 332 on MSP-ICN would be a great route for DL and KE, and certainly the most likely route if MSP is to receive more Asia service.

Agreed! IF and IF MSP gets anything, it would be seasonal, like NW used to do.

If the DL merger didn't occur, I'd be surprised if NW didn't start it by now, agreed.

I just wonder if the 330 would be good enough or if KE would send a 777....

Adding KE to AF that's coming in 2013 would liven up spotting at MSP. During the DL/NW transition, the most interesting thing was watching NW planes becoming DL (and the F9 tails).

Also, given the large population of southeast Asian immigrants and expats (in Minnesota and Wisconsin) I'd be interested to see if MSP-ICN to that area would be better connected--especially with the new VTE-ICN route on QV and existing SkyTeam member VR with HAN and SGN to both NRT and ICN.

Yes, but the Hmongs in Minnesota dont really travel much and when they do, its bottom barrel yields.

MSP's largest Asian markets are:

Tokyo: 36 passengers per day per direction (low for the year due to Tsunami, normally the number is around 60)
Shanghai: 30 passengers per day per direction
Seoul: 27 passengers per day per direction
Beijing: 22 passengers per day per direction
Ho Chi Minh City: 22 passengers per day per direction
Hong Kong: 19 passengers per day per direction

MSP-VTE is a lousy 3 passengers per day per direction and the yields are awful to boot.
