Aloha,

Alaska Airlines has started displaying some of the designs submitted by schoolchildren in Hawai'i as part of their newest "Paint the Plane" contest. There seem to be some VERY cool designs out there...

My favorite so far:

This TOTALLY represents the TRUE Hawai'i. Those of you eating Dominos Hawaiian pizza - its a FAKE! A true hawaiian pizza would have only spam or portuguese sausage... none of this ham/pineapple crap. I haven't met a Hawaiian that eats pineapples, unless not sober.

just kidding. I like this one:

a few others

GO WARRIORS!

I don't like the SPAM one, that looks a bit tacky and very uninspired.

The ALOHA one, the 2nd plane you showed is the best overall. I think that one will win. It represents the Hawaiian Islands a bit more, especially the yellow flower under the cockpit windows.

I'm sure part of the selection process is what's going to be the cheapest for paint.

I bet Hormel likes it too.

A comical themed AS airframe might represent a Polar Bear dressed in Hawaiian luau garb drinking from a coconut shell.

Personally I think something which would combine the 49th and 50th States entry into union statehood. As I recall both occurred in 1959. Of course Alaska entry as the forty ninth state shares some fame with the forty niner's of the 1898 gold rush era.

Not true! This was designed by a schoolkid in Sitka to commemorate Alaska statehood and it's quite elaborate!

So far I'd have to chose number two....beautiful!

We'll have to wait until the tenth to see the three finalist. I wonder if the end result will be the winners design as drawn, a modified design or combination of designs as the Portland Timbers plane wound up.
Now this is a design from a kid with good taste:

Will this a/c be a 738 or 739ER? Also IMHO, the second one will win- I would bet a 727 ride on it! (if only that was still possible):

Who is paying for the paint job? Didn't the State of Alaska pay for the Statehood airplane?

Also, I am surprised that AS did not include winglets on the blank template. All of their ETOPS birds have them, right?

The ones shown on that website are "random" and it is unlikely that any of them will be the finalists.

Personally, I like the SPAM one....us locals are very proud that we consume more SPAM than the rest of the country combined.

Aloha!

I really like the idea of having the Hawaiian flags cover the entire cowling. Looks classy, methinks.

Yes, that is correct. All of AS's 738s have winglets, whether they are ETOPS or not. (I'm not sure how many AS 738s are not ETOPS.)

All 73Gs have winglets also. AFAIK, all of the 737-900s have them, except for one which did not have the provisions for winglets. I think I saw that latter at SEA yesterday. Of course, all new 737-900ERs will come with winglets.

That one gets my vote as well. The Cheetah one would be my second choice.

I love that as well about that design...the Hawaii flag on the cowling looks fantastic! It'll be shame if they have to do an engine swap though!

Actually, the first two -990's AS got, 302AS and 305AS does not have winglets.

I would have had drawn at a minimum: a McDonald's spam, eggs, and rice breakfast, spam and egg sandwich (on white bread), and spam musubi.

Too bad I'm way too old to enter.

My Top 3, in no particular order:

* Blue Hawaii (with the Hawaiian flag cowling)

* Madame Pele

* Hawaiian Dancer (posted by PassedV1)
